My husband is in the hospital and is very very sick
He fell off a roof on Friday and sliced his leg open on the way down. They stitched it up and sent him home. Saturday, the leg turned really red and he had a high fever so I took him to the ER. They admitted him and put him on IV antibiotics "for 24 hours". But his temp keeps going up and down and the infection has spread down into his foot and around his leg.

Today an infectious disease doc came to see him and said he has an antibiotic resistant strep infection. He put him on a new antibiotic (this is the third kind).

I am pretty scared. He is 56 years old and in great health. He has never been in the hospital before. He feels miserable. They won't let him get out of bed at all and he isn't complaining. :scared:

Prayers are appreciated.

1. Breathe sweetie....
My dad is chronically ill, and resistant to pretty much every antibiotic on the market...But, he has survived at least 4 life-threatening septic infections in the past year. And, he's doing great now. Stay up, and don't lose hope :)

7. My dad almost died of a bad infection
That's why this is so scary.

But thanks, breathing does help.

2. I hope he gets better soon!
I assume they've done a sensitivity culture on the infection? This should determine exactly what type of antibiotic will be effective.

Hang in there!

The first one said strep A but the antibiotics are not helping.

18. With a sensitivity test they culture the bacteria and then try various
antibiotics on it to see which one works. This can take a few days though, so it's important in situations like this to make sure they do it as soon as it looks like you've got a resistant bug.

I'd also like to add, that he almost certainly acquired this bug in the hospital while being stitched up. There could be some liability on the part of the hospital.

51. He also didn't follow the doctor's orders
When his co-worker took him to the ER, the boss called and told the co-worker to come back to work. So hubby was alone in the ER all day. He finally called me after they stitched him to ask me to come get him so he could go back to work and get his truck. When I got there, the nurse told him not to drive because they had given him a shot for the pain and he might be impaired. Well Super Stud decided he felt okay to drive so he did. He also told me he would get his scripts filled on the way home and then decided he didn't feel well enough to stop at the pharmacy.

Of course he didn't tell me this or ask me to fill those scripts. Next day, he got up, didn't feel good but told me he was fine and went out the door to run errands (he went to get the scripts). By noon, he was sick as a dog and confessed that he had not started the antibiotic until that morning. Too late.

He also did not tell me that before I got to the ER, the doctor had told him to stay off that leg for 48 hours.

If anyone is in the wrong here (other than Super Stud), it is his boss for not staying with him in the ER until I got there. I am also a bit peeved at the boss for not calling me when he got hurt. I told the boss that today when he called. If he had been there, he would have known and told me that Super Stud was supposed to stay in bed and off the leg for 48 hours.

At this point, I don't want to sue anyone. I just want him to come home.

These infections can be nasty. I had Toxic Shock Syndrome, an infection that started in a PICC line just last March.

With the right antibiotics he's going to be just fine. The fevers and pain are not in the least bit pleasant. The fact that he is in good health otherwise is a bonus.

Thank goodness he didn't break bones or have more serious injuries in the fall.

hang in there!!

26. Thanks Peggy
One thing that really scares me is that he is a drummer and never sits still. He always plays on his thighs. So our son took his drumsticks to the hospital for him, assuming he would want them. Tonight he told me to take them home because he doesn't feel like playing. I have known and loved this man for 35 years and he has never ever not wanted to play drums. I tell people that he asked me to marry him when he realized he found a woman who didn't mind being number two in his life, behind those drums. So I had to fight back tears when he handed me those drumsticks tonight.

I laid them right back down, kissed him and walked out of the room.

48. When those we love suddenly depart from their usual ways...
It is terribly wrenching..

But he is doing what he needs to do in order to get well.....

ALL his energies need to go into that.......

He will get well......

And he will play the drums again........

I am sure of this.....

I suddenly have a very certain feeling, and those are rarely wrong!

Please hang in there......

28. He sat in the ER for 4 hours before they stitched him up
He also tore off the skin so there wasn't much to stitch. And he said he felt like the geek of the day because all the nurses and docs kept coming in and looking at his wound, like it was something unusual. So there was plenty of opportunity to infect it.

When we got to the ER the next day (at a different hospital) they immediately ripped out those stitches.

49. Good and bad
The good news is his life isn't in serious danger from what you've said. The bad news is he could easily lose his leg. With prosthetics the way they are today, though, it isn't the worst thing in the world.

Just be glad he didn't break his neck.

a friend of mine was injured at work when he fell over 40 feet onto a concrete dock and he was told he would never walk again -- he was good to go after rehab except for some slight pain in the knee after a few months, no use assuming the worse because they can do some great things these days

69. I'm praying for you and for him.
Last year my husband had a major heart attack. They put in 3 stents and a pacemaker, but he got a staph infection from the hospital and wound up spending an extra 3 weeks there. He's also a diabetic. Point in telling you this is:

He's 10 years older and was in poor health and a smoker before his attack, but he did get over the infection and is in reasonably good shape now.

I know what you're going through. Don't make yourself sick too.

73. I'm sure he'll be fine. I had a similar thing a few years ago.
For no known reason, a freak strep infection attacked the skin around my eye. Basically, I went to bed fine and woke up a few hours later deformed. My face was unrecognizable, if I covered up the right side. Anyway, I spent a few days in the hospital (in pediatrics because I was 20...wow, that was interesting) on intense IV antibiotics, but I was fine in the end. I didn't lose any vision either. I just have a scar above my left eye.

Since the doctors had never seen anything like it, I spent the whole time with assorted doctors and students wandering through my room to see the "elephant girl."

You know he works for the school district too. My principal has been a godsend. She is raising hell for him with legal dept. His damn idiot boss left him ALONE at the ER when he got hurt. I am just livid about that. WIth the cutbacks, my hubby is overworked and underpaid. Now he will be out of work for who knows how long.

His dipshit boss also hasn't bothered to come to the hospital to see him. Callous, anyone?

InApril I was admitted to the hospital with a very bad
case of pneumonia. The antibiotic-resistant type.
The pros at the hospital had the correct antibiotics
and defeated the infection.
I'm praying your husband will have the smae outcome.

85. I worked in a bacteriology lab for several years, so I know
the ramifications of strep infections. But I also know that people do recover from them. Slowly, but they do get btter.

I'll be thinking about him throughout the day. Don't know what I'd do if anything like that happened to Mr. Gray. Hang in there, friend.

108. Remember this also. Some of those really powerful antibiotics

111. Sounds like it could be.
But some cases ARE curable. I had a neighbor, very young guy who is an arborist who had it and the doctors thought he was going to lose his arm. Instead, after about 4-5 days, the antibiotics kicked in and he is doing fine.

We were really worried in the beginning but things are fine.

But it not only sounds like is in very good care, but that he has a loving family pulling for his recovery. And that can make a big difference in a situation like this.

Considering that he is in great health, his body is probably putting up a huge fight against the injection. And it will eventually overcome it.

Hang in there. Things are going to improve.
