What's the Jewel of your collection?

Do you collect anything? If so what do you consider the crown jewel of your collection.

I collect a couple things, but my big one is comic books. I'd have to say the crown jewel of my comic collection is my copy of Fantastic Four #48, the first appearance of the Silver Surfer.

4. I have a rather large music collection

Which I keep adding to. If I had any crown jewels, there'd be quite a few. The Miles Davis / Gil Evans box set ranks way up there, as does the Led Zeppelin: Complete Studio Recordings box set. Oh, and the fact that I own a nearly complete set of Frank Zappa releases (the official Rykodisc ones, anyways) would rank way up there as well.

13. Baseball Memorabilia

My crowl jewel is a Hank Greenberg autographed ball - on the sweet spot.

My grandfather used to live in Michigan when he was 30 and he went to a Tiger game. Got a foul ball on the last day of the season and Greenberg was sitting in the stands with his wife (he was retired at the time) and Greenberg signed it for him - on the sweet spot. That wasn't really established back then, but it's huge in terms of memorabilia now. But I'd never sell the ball anyway - it's a piece of family history!

15. I collect bells

and there are two that I love, one is from Mexico and it sterling silver with 3 bells on one stem, so it sounds magical when it rings, the other one is a small asian temple bell. You have to swing the "knocker" and have it hit the bell and it makes a "bong" sound.

I probably have 50 bells at this point, all shapes and sizes.

16. My "Way Out West"...t-shirt...

..this was the first X t-shirt that was band approved and sold on their first year of tour in 1980.

I bought mine in June of 1980, I believe. I have babied it all these years...only wear it on rare occasion.
Somewhere along the way, I did acquire Exene's autograph, it's on the left sleeve...

I had first printings in a straight run. It took awhile for me to find a first printing of number 1. I sold them as a set last year for mucho dinero. It was a tough call, but I took the money and reinvested in other holes in my collection. I kept later printings for future reading. Those early issues of TMNT were really superb.

...all bought at the time, and carefully preserved ever since...I read X-Men #1 and Avengers #1 while watching the 1963 All-Star Game... Oh, yeah--a battered, but still readable, copy of the legendary May 1942 *Astounding*...with van Vogt's "Asylum"--an incredible trip--the last chapter of Heinlein's "Beyond This Horizon"--my favorite SF novel--and an obscure novelette by someone named Isaac Asimov...called "Foundation"...:-)...

They're all packed away at my parents house now, but I was a big fan of Conan the Barbarian when I was collecting. Anyway, I guess my crown jewel would be the fact that I have the entire series.

47. I have several "collections"

Books, of course. Quite a few of the ratty SF paperbacks are worth $10 or more--Avram Davidson, R A Lafferty, Cordwainer Smith. Bought back in the day when a paperback was less than a dollar.

One non-SF rarity is "Mothers & Amazons" by Helen Diner. Yes, used copies are cheap. But this wonderfully witty Austrian feminist who wrote between the wars is sorely neglected. Perhaps her advocacy of "female castration" is the problem? (Really, most of the book is great.)

My favorite book? A non-mint, non-1st-edition "I Claudius" purchased for 50 cents. Autographed by Robert Graves. (Plus a scrap of paper saying "Robert Graves, Esq., Deya, Majorca.")

Lots of LPs, too. Some by local heroes fetch fair prices nowadays: Townes van Zandt, Richard Dobson, the Elevators & the ever-insane Red Krayola. Apparently, "The Unwritten Works of Whistler, Chaucer, Detroit & Greenhill" is fairly collectible; it's also pretty good. (Alas, none of these are "mint.")

A jewel because (a) it's worth much more nowadays, especially since I got it free and (2) the artist is still alive & playing: "New Rock & Roll" by Herschel Berry & The Natives.
