Today was Popsicle Day at church.
Everyone who showed up on this hot, muggy morning got a popsicle.

1. My dear Rev!
What a terrific idea! A very nice way to stay cooler, IMHO....

Did you have a good turn-out?

2. Surprisingly, yes!
I called a couple of people yesterday and let them know "rumor has it, there will be popsicles tomorrow." Surprising how that gives kids an incentive to drag their parents to church, isn't it?

Also, right before church we had severe thunderstorms rip through the area, and I thought that might deter people.

4. Was it announced?
I'd think that if you're gonna do that, you shouldn't make the announcement. If Jesus can't bring someone to church, a popsicle shouldn't either.

6. Nope, it wasn't.
But I did the same thing last summer when it was beastly hot, and people were so surprised and happy. Today, one of my oldest members came up with a big smile on her face and said "I haven't had a popsicle for.... well, for a very long time. This was wonderful!"

BTW, the lectionary text was about the feeding of the 5,000. :)

21. Wouldn't it be a cool title for a sermon, though?
About Jesus sharin' popsicles with all the little children?

15. Does crucifixion kill your taste buds too? Grape ones are awful!
My wife refuses to buy popsicles any more, because last time she did she got this bag of about a brazillion in assorted flavors. Half of them were grape. Pissed me off to no end...I hate Artificial Grape Flavor with a passion.

There's only one way to make grape popsicles that are edible. Buy a bag of grapes and a bag of six-inch-long toothpicks. Skewer enough grapes to fill five inches of the stick, and throw them in the freezer. Delicious AND nutritious!

With seedless grapes preferrably.

12. We weren't going to have popsicle day, but one little boy brought
a few popsicles, not nearly enough for everyone, I was sure. Yet, somehow, there was one for everyone, and several boxes leftover.

To quote Keith, "I made that up".

What a great idea, Rev! Is it copyrighted?

14. Of course not - help yourself!!
That, too was part of the inspiration. I began by telling a story of church picnics we used to have when I was a kid. One year, it was so hot, I just didn't want to go... but we were told that if we did come, there would be a surprise: Dilly Bars for everyone!

Then, of course, I launched into the "feeding" story, and tied it up nicely at the end. Just one problem. I handed out the popsicles at the end, rather than the beginning of the sermon. So we had to skip the middle hymn, because really - how do you sing from the hymnal and eat a popsicle at the same time?

BTW - this will work for the next couple of weeks, since we're entering the "Bread of Heaven" narrative of John. O8)

18. I'm counting on the small-town gossip to spread the word.
I knew a pastor who used to pass out candy during Children's Time. I told him that was a bribe. His response: So? At least it gets them here. :)
