1. My junior high school was Kitty Hawk JHS.
Of course it was named for the road it is located on. But, our mascot was the flyers, and we had a scale model of the Wright Flyer in our foyer.

I've always been big into flight. When I went to DC, the one place I HAD to go was the National Air and Space Museum. Now I've got to here: http://www.nasm.si.edu/museum/udvarhazy/ So, I guess a return trip to DC is in order. :D

2. AWesome,
I am going down in a few months. We need to meet up sometime GOP. Sounds like we have a lot in common.

I love to fly in small planes. If I ever got a chance to get in the space shuttle. They would call me lead foot cause I would be banging on the gas peddle to go go go go go go.

AH! Flight

3. I was actually going to take lessons once.
A guy I work with on occasion is an instructor pilot who had his own airplane. He had to sell his plane though. Too much crapola after 9/11.

I can take the classes fairly cheap at the local community college, but it's affording the flight time that gets expensive. :-( I'd love to be a private pilot. I've even got a place to live picked out if I ever get rich enough. It's a country club on a golf course with its own private air strip. I'd never have to leave! :D

4. I flew kites at Kitty Hawk once
I was little and our family was visiting relatives in Virginia Beach. We took a daytrip to Kitty Hawk and flew kites there for a few hours. Definately a good place to test out a new plane!!

10. Wow. I never did understand why they went to NC
Are there not hills in Ohio? Was it the shore breeze? Did the North Carolina DMV pay them off?

12. They Wrote the Weather Bureau
The Wrights were incredibly methodical engineers. They simply asked the U.S. government which part of the country had the winds they needed. The government answered that eastern North Carolina ought to work -- although they actually were incorrect, because there are a couple other better spots.

And the rest is history.
