What was the fashion problem with Members Only jackets
I never understood what the big deal was with these jackets or why they are such a fashion disaster.

Can someone please explain???

1. I think it was the neck buckle.
A little too, too.

2. They were usually one part...
Of an overall mullet-driven fashion disaster. I owned on for about 5 minutes. I just did not like it.

On the other hand, I have always owned that men's classic: the black-leather motorcycle jacket. Appropriate even for the opera. ;-)

3. TV say it good!
Me obey TV!

TV GOOD!

LOL

That's the best answer I can give sadly. Fortunately I own nothing that says "Members Only".

But I know what's packed away in Xen's closet, and it is too "members only"! (Gah, I wish he were awake to see me teasing him about silly fashion statements...)

4. didn't you push the sleeves up on those things?
I mean, a jacket that you push the sleaves up your arms is just stupid. Isn't it?

I wouldn't really know - I was in middle school when they were popular.

5. Huh!?!
I don't remember a "fashion problem". They were popular 20 years ago. Styles change. It's like the leisure suit. People look back and laugh, but at the time it was perfectly normal. Double-knit polyester was the answer to every bachelor who didn't like to iron.

Look at what you're wearing now. Look at your hair-style. Someday your kids are going to look at "old" pictures of you and laugh their ass off. Get ready.

6. I have clothes in my closet that I've owned for over 15 years
I rarely buy anything that is too trendy. I'm wearing a black cashmere turtleneck that is 6 years old and still in style to this day.

7. Never could afford the real thing
so I had a knock off- still it was just because everyone had one that made them so popular. Looking back- geez how dumb. It wasn't even warm.

10. Believe me
You're kids will laugh at you. I don't care if you're wearing what you believe to be timeless fashion, it will change and they'll laugh you to scorn. I did it to my folks, my kids did it to me. It's a right-of-passage.

12. that's how the PR works. Make you hate last year's clothes
so that you have to buy new ones this year. Prompt you to make fun of people whose clothes are a year old, thus they buy today's styles to aid their self-esteem

market-driven PR manipulation

create a backlash.

16. "People Who Dress Like TV Stars Look Like People Who Dress Like TV
Stars."

I remember seeing that line somewhere, back in the 1980s. It was a way of defining wannabees.

The 'Members Only' jackets were popularized by the General Hospital actor Anthony Geary. The fashion faux pas is, not only are you wearing something that's extremely dated, confinable to a in-and-out-in-5-minutes fad, but you're marrying it to wannabeeism.

19. When I was in high school, my brother said only homos wore them
Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 03:24 PM by noonwitch
I'm not trashing gays, I'm just making fun of teenage male homophobia. My brother, unlike most conservative men, outgrew it.

He used to say that that was how I should know that Luke on GH was gay, because he wore a Member's Only jacket.

Now my test is to ask whether a guy likes "The Three Stooges". If he does, he's straight, if not, he's gay. The only women I know who claim to like the stooges are just faking it for some guy they're trying to impress.

back on topic - I was a young adult in the late 70s early 80s, somehow I think the Members Only thing went right by me, 'cause I'm not really sure what it refers to. musta been the drugs. :7
