Fishy Ice Lollies for Over-Heated Otters
18/07/06
Our family of otters are also going crazy for their very own versions - fish-flavoured ice lollies.
The lollies in question, each containing a mixture of mackerel, trout and squid, are part of a new environmental enrichment programme for the aquarium's trio of Asian short claw otters.
The fishy treats are frozen into blocks of ice with a large wooden stick attached and then placed in their diving pool.
Keeper Mat Clarke says the fishy lollies serve a double purpose of keeping the otters cool on sunny days and encouraging them to work harder for their food and utilise their natural hunting instincts:
"We wanted to create a way of feeding them that meant they weren't simply sitting around waiting for the food to arrive - the ice means they have to use their natural instincts just as they would in the wild to get to the food inside.
