I couldn't be bothered to watch that stuff. Fanatsy and Science Fiction and Dungeons and Dragons hoo-hah does nothing for me.

Am I the only guy in the universe with no desire to see this flick?

3. No.
I'm of like mind, but I always thought it didn't turn me one because it was a male fantasy. (Before you flame me, it is my opinion. And not that educated of an opinion. But it has male fantasy dripping from it, from my view.)

8. That's funny, because most of the poeple I know who are WAY into
"The Lord of the Dance...uh, I mean RINGS" are women. They're all into that Renaissance Festival stuff too (what is THAT about?) Huzzah!
I don't know why. I just don't see the appeal of any of that stuff.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go roll my 12-sided dice to see how many hit points my magic-user lost in that fight with the orc...

yes.

LOTR is less about fantasy and more about the universal human condition to perservere.

I think in the current political climate we could all do with a bit of that right now.

I officially do not get it. And I liked the books a lot when I read them in Jr High. But I watched the first one and had a hard time staying awake.

Read (or re-read) Harvard Lampoon's "Bored of the Rings" for some dated, but excellent comic relief. :D

I have never seen it, and I will never see it.

I am not much of a movie goer. Ocassionally I will get a glimpse of a movie on TV (rarely the whole thing). If I see LOTR on TV I will turn it off.

My daughter's father (she is my step-daughter) attempted to force her to read this crap. She hated it (being forced to read it, as well as the story). My wife stepped in an relieved her of this duty. She is more than encouraged to read it, but only if she wants to.

22. That's the difference between Star Trek and Dr Who.
Star Trek took itself way too seriously and was consequently dull as dirtwater. Dr Who could never take itself seriously, which makes it eminently more watchable.
I don't like this lumping in of Tolkien with Star Trek, though. I lump him in with Shakespeare myself.

21. LOTR
Not sure how anyone can comment on a movie they haven't seen.

I don't think anyone is asking you to love it, like it or see it if that is not your thing.

Personally I found the books one of the best reads of my life. The movies capture the essence of the book which have very little to do with fantasy. It's a story about the spirit we all have, hope, hero's who stand up for what is right not for what they can profit.

It's a story considering the times that can remind all of us to what really matters. it could possibly show people why Bush and others are not real leaders and what it is they lack.

See it don't see it, I don't really care. However don't diminish those of us that enjoyed the book and movies and took more away from it then it being another Treky remake.

Thanks:kick:

28. If a movie has elves and swords and wizards in it, there is a 100.1%
chance I will never see it. Especialy if there's also lots of actors speaking in haughty Brit accents. Just a personality quirk, I guess. Fantasy/ Sci-Fi makes me laugh...which I don't think is the intention of the filmakers.

And when it doesn't make me laugh, it bores the crap out of me.

Anybody see "American Splendor?" That's my idea of a good flick.

I am not close-minded because I have no desire to see Lord of the Rings. I have a huge collection of movies at home, a gigantic collection of vinyl records and CD's, shelves and shelves of books, I'm a part of dozens of political groups, support Greenpeace, keep up with the issues, am a big fan of alternate/conspiaracy literature, am quite liberal in politics but keep my ear to conservative opinions to gauge the natioanl mood, subscribe to a variety of magazines, I'm listening to NPR's report of the neest Natioanl PRess Club meeting....and you think I'm close minded because I don't care to engage in the latest fad?

35. well, first, it's not a fad
the fact that you are "not interested in anything sci-fi or fantasy" categorically is closed-minded -- some very relevant political / human commentary occurs in both of those genres (ESPECIALLY the Lord of the Rings), and a lot of it's crap, too, i'll admit -- it's ridiculous not to do something just because it's popular, or for the reasons you have stated here (don't like Star Trek because it's a bunch of B-movie actors -- one of which is a member of the royal shakespeare company -- many of them are B-movie actors, perhaps, but not all) Go read LOTR, Dune, or Stranger in a Strange Land -- watch "The Best of Both Worlds" or 2001: A Space Odyssey, and then come back and dismiss Sci-fi and fantasy out of hand.

36. As a kid, I was into Sci-Fi and Fantasy stuff.
I loved the Star Wars movies (still do) and played Dungeons and Dragons with my brother and his friends. Instead of playing "Army" ith fake guns, we played "Army" with swords and pretended we were knights.

I have read (and seen) Dune, Stranger in a Strange Land, and I read the Tolkein books when I was 10. I've seen 2001: A Space Odyssey many times. I'm not dismissing this stuff out of hand, I'm dismissing it because I find that it doesn't turn me on like it did when I was 11.

Now that I'm 28, I feel that movies, books, music, that deal in reality, like Amercican Splendor, Rushmore, and Don Dellilo, etc. excite me much more, and Fantasy stuff increasingly makes me chuckle unintentionally...and most of it seems silly and escapist nowadays. In other words, I grew up.

37. You would be better served by saying this to begin with, then.
Don't dismiss Star Trek as "B-Movie actors... spandex... techno-babble," because that isn't an apt description. Yes, all of those things are in the show, but deeper themes should be acknowledged.

Don't refer to LOTR as "sword fights, elves and shit" because it is FAR more than that, as any of the unbelievably bad imitations should show. I shouldn't need to detail Tolkien's literary and linguistic abilities. Sure, some people take the lifestyle too far, but the same can be said of fans of most things.

Science fiction and fantasy can be interpreted as silly and escapist, sure, but they do not have to be. If you don't like them any more, fine, but there is no need to insult those who do. I liked American Splendor, and Rushmore, but ANY movie can be construed to be just as silly and escapist.

I haven't found a genre of movie that I can say I'm categorically uninterested in, though, really. I'm afraid that if I restrict myself to not watching science fiction movies, for example, then that's effectively equating Mission to Mars with Bladerunner -- just not right. I don't care to stereotype.

Yeah, there are *many* parts that are silly and can be made fun of, but on the whole they are entertaining. The same can be said for Ghost World, but that's where gloriously subjective taste comes into it, I think.

Some people hate LOTR because of anti-hype, some people genuinely don't care and are not entertained whatsoever by the movies. I'd like to be a hipster all the time, but the geek in me *enjoys* movies like The Fellowship of the Ring despite their flaws, pure and simple.

Tried reading the books years ago a couple of times couldn't plow though it.

The first time I saw the first film I fell asleep 4 times - kept watching it to figure out what the big deal was

Have since seen it on cable TV (must have been a really rainy day!) and it's started to grow on me a bit so I'll reserve judgement.

Atleast it's taking some attention away from that pedestrian derivative garbage that is Harry bloody Twatter - I wish people would stop trying to claim that it's "well written" if you want to read a (not very original) kids book fine but stop pretending it's literature!
