“Stupid White Men” by Michael Moore

Hey, not a bad book! I started reading this yesterday and couldn’t put it down – Moore really has a way of keeping your interest. After the heavy reading in “The Clinton Wars” I needed something that was a little less taxing and an easier read. And Moore is no slouch – he let’s both Republicans and Democrats, bush and Clinton have it with both barrels. It was hard to put the book down.

I have a stack of 10 books I have read and 10 left to read on this self political education journey I have partaken – next up I’m going to read Moore’s “Dude, Where’s My Country”

1. Man, there are so many out there. Another book, if you have the time is...

"Bushwhacked!" by Molly Ivins. Explains how Bush's diasterous domestic policies are affecting ordinary Americans. It tackles serious issues, but Molly has a nice sense of humor, which sort of leavens things out.

4. I have that. That's one of the 10 that I've already read.

And "Shrub" by Molly Ivins is in my other stack yet to read.

3. That's another great one! You have to read Krugman's book.

It's scary. "The Great Unraveling". Definately a must.

I have a total of 20 books here on my "have read" and "still have yet to read" lists. I also have a wish list started at Amazon.com of books I'd like to read when I get through this list. When the time comes I'd like to pick up something by Noam Chomsky because his name comes up so much and I know nothing about him or his work, but I'll get some suggestions from DUers when the time comes.

Mark Crispin Miller's book was excellent, BTW. A must read to understand Dubya.

10. It was on all the "political" book display tables in Chile

when I was there last month. Also in Argentina. It was usually displayed along with "Yo, Pinochet" a supposed autobiography and a biography about Salvador Allende.

It was interesting to see it so prominently displayed, in all the bookstores (they're all independent), in both countries.

12. Dude,

While a fun read, there's not much new presented in the book. It's basically Michael Moore ranting for 213 or so pages.

Of course, what's presented is merely a viewpoint. I bet plenty of readers might find something to learn in his newest book.

"Lies" by Al Franken does cover a lot more topics though, and I got more out of it...

They're both good.

from his first book?? And as far as his ranting goes - I sorta liked that about his other book. :) I can relate to ranting. ;)

But don't let the chapter where he flaunts his wealth and the tax cut he got because of his wealth annoy you too much! (it starts out that way but then turns it into a rather nice slam agaist *, so don't get me wrong here! :D ...)

Others use pages as TP.

Mustn't forget that a book will help kindle the ol' fireplace...

Dunno about any other use or combination for book pages.

However, there's always a use for everything. I took my old Rush paperback and let the birds use it as a bathroom...

Fear being foremost among them. Moore is an NRA member and gun owner--he's not anti-gun. Anybody who doesn't understand that either didn't see the movie, wasn't paying attention, or willfully ignored the real point of the film.

Excellent list Booberdawg and it parallels mine quite closely.

One book that I'm waiting to tackle until I have more time it The Radical Reader, edited by Timothy McCarthy and John McMillan. It's a collection of the writings that reflect America's radical tradition, from Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" to Kate Millett's "Sexual Politics" and covering such movements as socialism, black power and radical environmentalism.

So many books, so little time.

Moore's whole point of the movie wasn't that guns cause violence, but that our society somehow encourages reactionary, fear-based attitudes that result in violence.

watch the movie again and don't let your ideology get in the way of critical thinking.

Moore has to say because you disagree with one issue is foolish. I liked the book and I'm 64 pages into Dude now and like it. I like Moore and what he has to say but he's a Green and I'm not. I can't discount EVERYTHING he stands for and says just because of that! :shrug:

My wish list is getting quite long as well with not so mainsteam books, so I'm anxious to get through this stack of 10 books I have left sitting here. Being unemployed allows me to get through them pretty quickly (as long as I don't cruise DU all day ;-))

33. Just finished reading "Dude, Where's My Country?"

and it is just as good. The one disappointing thing I learned is that when Moore reached out to Democratic leaders to form a Democratic-Green alliance for 4002 in order to beat bush* he learned what Democratic leaders will not admit in public - that they have basically written off 2004. They see little chance of defeating bush*. At least that was at the time the book was published several months ago.

Other that that disappointment, it really is a good book and an easy read. He does tend to go on rants and I like that.
