What is the trojan "generic downloader.g"?
When I started my computer up this evening, McAfee was going nuts about it and wanted me to do a scan. It's underway now and has found 72 infected files, all in the temp folder.

Is this going to take care of it or should I be worried?

yeah, yeah, snark about trojan.

2. You went somewhere bad or downloaded a bad hamburger
Could have been from an image you viewed too if your system isn't up to date.

4. Most likely...
I was looking for a particular graphic last night and went through a bunch of sites -- but it was a chemistry site that has always been reliable that has links to others.

I hope this McAfee scan takes care of it. I don't need a fried harddrive or corrupt registry.

5. Windows XP?
restart in safe mode click start, run, type %temp%, click select all under edit up above, then press delete.

Empties the hidden temp folders in XP. You can do it in regular mode too, except one or two active files usually have to be unhighlighted by holding "ctrl" key and then hitting your delete key.

6. Thanks for the tip
I'll do it when McAfee finishes scanning -- it's been scanning for over an hour.

9. If you can afford to lose some files do a system restore two days back....

Otherwise hit it with Highjack This.

High jack gives you a log file of
threats so you can safely select
and delete the files created in the
last few days.

If important system files are infected
you are in a bit of a pickle.

14. It is best to keep your data on a separate drive
or partition if you can manage it. That way you can always nuke the system in an emergency.

16. I prefer Norton
but Cox Internet is incompatible so I have to use McAfee. It did catch it though.
