Andre's giant: Agassi wins epic match vs. Baghdatis

NEW YORK -- How about that? Andre Agassi, 36 years old and burdened by a bad back, held up better than the kid across the net in a thriller that will be talked about for years.

Buoyed by a cortisone injection, along with a raucous, sellout crowd that boosted his spirits when things suddenly looked bleak as could be, Agassi extended his career for at least one more match by beating eighth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 7-5 at the U.S. Open.

They traded stinging strokes for nearly four hours as Thursday night became Friday, and it was the 21-year-old Baghdatis who broke down physically, his body contorted by cramps in both thighs during an eight-deuce, four-break-point game that Agassi eventually held to lead 5-4 in the fifth. Later, Baghdatis used the chair umpire's stand to stretch his aching legs.

And there was Agassi, still hustling to reach seemingly unreachable shots, responding with winners, and skipping out to the baseline to start games at his record 21st consecutive Open -- one for each year of Baghdatis' life.

"Tonight has been another example of moments you're not guaranteed in life," Agassi said.

3. That match was bananas
Ba-na-nas. Aggasi's performance was, IMHO, not stunning from a tennis perspective (well, at least not as far as Aggasi's capabilities are concerned) but as a display of physical and mental endurance I was just blown away. The last set in particular was insane. Good for Agassi. As far as Baghdatis is concerned, I was already a fan of his. I said before the match I hope he wins a lot of matches in his career, but not this one. I thought he was a good sport with the crowd obviously in Agassi's camp the whole night. I'll definately be paying a lot more attention to his career after tonight's performance.

Color me impressed by both players, and good luck to Agassi against that Becker dude. Where have I heard that name before...

*sigh*

I've been a tennis fan since my teenage years, and used to play some (badly, but hey)... however I haven't watched in ages. I started watching again after hearing this would be his last open. My, how I love that game. :)

Glad I didn't miss his first round game, and definitely won't miss the rest!

13. Did you notice how Agassi was walking after the game?
He looked really stiff.

He's won two 5 setters in a row now. He's a joy to watch.
