Neil Schon, Eric Johnson, Satriani. I need stuff from the last 5 years or so that I may have missed; or less popular stuff from earlier. I have most of Satriani's stuff through the mid to late 90s, and early Eric Johnson, but nothing from the last 8 years or so. Give me your faves; I'm on a kick for this stuff.
Oh, and to give back, don't forget "Respect The Wind" (VH; Twister sntrk) and "With A Tear" (Journey; Time 3)

1. Do you like Steve Vai?

He was a student of Satriani, then got the gig as Zappa's "stunt guitarist" in the early '80s. Check out the CD called Alien Love Secrets.

Another hot guitarist that used to play with Zappa (and now plays with Vai) is Mike Keneally, but he's not just a shredder. He has a new live CD called Guitar Therapy Live, which I haven't heard yet, so I don't know how much of it is what you're looking for. Ask bbernardini, I think he's the biggest Keneally fan on DU. (Or check the web site www.keneally.com.)

And you might also want to listen to some of Zappa's own stuff: Hot Rats, or Waka/Jawaka, or Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar...

3. Oh yeah..

Do like Vai, but to me he's not as .....melodic? as Satriani. He just dosen't grab me the way Sat does. However, I may change my mind again....my ex had his first two releases but we only listened to a couple tracks. I guess I'm just weird that way.

6. That a good place to start

The thing I love about him is, his music is constantly evolving. He's never content to stand still. He's done everything from jazz fusion, to flemenco, to Indian influenced jazz, to classical. All his stuff is great.

7. Yeah, I saw the Remember Shakti tour several years ago.

One of the best shows I've ever seen. Come to think of it, that's a good live double CD.

12. A few older ones, in case you overlooked them:

Jeff Beck's always been one of my favorites. "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" is so incredible. And some even older Beck ones, "Definitely Maybe" and of course, "Beck's Bolero." Another good, older guitar piece is, IIRC, "Maggot Brain" by Parliament/Funkadelic. Newer stuff is eluding my mind right now, but if I think of any, I'll let you know.
