that's how I do it, only the mac addresses you put into the router will be allowed to access the tubes through you then.

when I couldn't get the link into my own wifi, I ended up using someone else's instead. It's amazing how we can do that. Just think--17 years ago, a 100 baud modem was a big deal!

Is he stealing music when his neighbor turns his radio up too?

His neighbor is transmitting an unencrypted and insecure radio signal onto his property...he is simply listening to it with his computer. When his own computer blasts out a radio transmission, his neighbors wifi router is intercepting it WITHOUT THE OP'S PERMISSION and rebroadcating the traffic across the Internet.

If you break into your neighbors house, turn off their router security, and start using their connection that is STEALING. If your neighbors have their router set up to respond to anyone that happens to be in range, that's THEIR PROBLEM. If they don't want people using their connection, they should turn on the security.

Yes, I've mooched before. I also run an open AP at my office (firewalled, of course) so that others can partake of my bandwidth.

18. It's perfectly cool. If someone doesn't want their bandwidth stolen...

then they should secure their network. If they can't even be bothered to secure their network, then they should expect someone will be stealing their bandwidth.

My wireless connection is secure. My neighbor's is not. Do I use their connection sometimes? Yes, there have been a few times when my connection has gone out, but their's hasn't.

Basically, it's easy to secure a network and if you don't secure it, then expect people will steal it.

I found their next door neighbor's signal. So we started surfing. About one minute later, the phone rings, and it's the neighbor.

"HEY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING???"

He just wanted to know what was up, it was all a coincidence, but it scared the beejesus out of me.
