The Striker. A true happening in failure and futility.

The doors are digging
The nets are spreading
The V-12 is hammering down
The Captain is weeping
The Striker is sleeping
For nowhere is a shrimp to be found.

The rattlesnake eggs are packaged in a small white packet. On the packet printed in bold black letters it informs the reader 'Rattle Snake Eggs-$1.75'. Next to my ear I shake the packet. I hear the dry rasping of the rattlesnake eggs housed within. Were I in the woods of the Francis Marion National Forest back home in South Carolina I would stop. I would listen. I would look and I would shiver.

But I am not home in South Carolina. I am at a road side truck stop somewhere in Georgia. Tourists stop here too. JL and I are not tourists. We are shrimper-mens on our way to St. Augustine where a seventy two foot wooden hull trawler waits tied to the dock restless to go to sea.

With a hot bitter Styrofoam cup of coffee in hand I wonder outside of the large truck stop building still thinking about rattlesnake eggs. Rattlesnakes birth their young live full of venom and hunger. They emerge from their mother ready to hunt. I would be mighty disappointed waiting for my rattlesnake eggs to hatch that is if I were a tourist and had bought some rattlesnake eggs.
