what word or concept do you routinely use that you poorly misunderstand?

for me it would be cassirer's notion of the verticality and horizontality of the sacred and the profane and how christianity informed it.

I don't think anyone really understands it. I tried ignoring it for a while, but that didn't really work out all too well.
