What was the most jaded, cynical thing you thought regarding Christmas
Edited on Sat Dec-20-03 12:49 AM by Valerie5555
For me it was things relating to "Santa Claus, Satan Claus"

Oops on edit

On edit a cynical Easter thought is "Finally 1 of our local cat clubs "rabbitnapped" the Easter Bunny, and replaced him with a KITTEN, about time, MEOW......................"

On edit 2 more kitty related thoughts: Christmas kittens may grow up to have kittens of their own that would only end up in the SPCA. :( Socks as Arkansas "First Kitten," suddenly getting a case of feline ADHD and attacking the Clintons' Christmas tree. :D

On edit an American political oriented cynical thought: Santa must be A REPUBLICAN for he wears RED.

Thanks to Bush and Haliburton. They evidently don't care about kids. It seems they aren't profitable donors.

9. Consumerism...........
it's nothing but a retailer's dream. The notion that Baby Jesus will look favorably upon a person if he/she buys everything they want for Christmas. I hate the holiday, I really do.

11. That it is, in itself, a cynical exercise?
Or at least has become one... if I hear one more ad for diamonds, I'm going to puke.

It's nothing but a month of competitive consumption, in the guise of a celebration. Buy some crappy item for a friend because you know he's going to buy some crappy item for YOU, when you'd both be better off with less stuff and paying down the Visa bill a little more. Unfortunately, this decision has to be mutual -- I've been trying to convince my parents NOT to buy me anything, but they refuse to not participate, so I cave into the obligation to get them something, and we usually both go overboard on useless shit none of us really want. (My sister and I have managed to declare an amnesty at least.)

Christmas comes at the end of the year for inventory reduction purposes, nothing more. Say what you like about other religions, but none have come anywhere close to whoring out the spirit of their holidays the way "Christians" (especially American Christians) whore out Christmas and Easter.

Hardly a new observation, but anyone who pretends there's anything BUT cynicism left in X-mas is fooling themselves.

CHRISTMAS CAROL (excerpts) - by Tom Lehrer

Christmastime is here by golly,
Disapproval would be folly,
Deck the halls with hunks of holly,
Fill the cups and don't say when...

On Christmas Day you can't be sore,
Your fellow man you must adore,
There's time to rob him all the more,
The other three hundred and sixty-four...

Relations sparing no expense will
Send some useless old utensil,
Like a matching pen and pencil,
"Just the thing I need, how nice."

It doesn't matter how sincere it
Is or how heartfelt the spirit,
Sentiment will not endear it,
What's important is THE PRICE.

wouldn't it be funny if Carter were to have left the NATIONAL CHRISTMAS TREE DARK in honor of the captives held in Iran and they all staged a MASS BREAKOUT and ESCAPED.

On edit I read that some of them tried to do just that.
