So, tell me something....
... that I don't know already... science? politics? history? language? what you had for dinner?

Here's mine:

In Stuttgart, Germany, there's a really cool restaurant called Cafe 44. They make great salads, with corn in them. You should look them up if you're ever there.

You?

1. The word "parabola" and the word "kill"
ultimately come from the same root. ;)

24. OK...you asked for it..
Parabola: Late Latin parabola from Greek parabolé (acute accent in place of a macron because I'm too lazy to look up the Unicode), from paraballein, "to compare," from prefix para-, "beside" and root verb ballein, "to throw." Ballein from Proto-IE root form *gwlnø-.

Kill: English from Middle English killen from Old English cyllan, both with meaning "to kill," from Germanic *kuljan, from Proto-IE root form *gwlyo-.

*gwlnø- and *gwlyo- both suffixed zero-grade forms (meaning loss of the medial vowel e) of full PIE root *gwel- with meaning "to throw, reach, or pierce."

First, mammary gland (the bottom half of this picture is the part to look at):

Second, thymus gland (and imagine that it's the exact same color as the bottom half of the first picture--I'm not sure what kind of stain this preparation is using):

4. The need analysis document for all Title IV Federal financial aid
(college level) is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Contrary to popular belief, the FAFSA does not tell students what their awards are; that is done by the poor schmucks at the schools who have to assess aid based on the school's costs. The FAFSA provides an Expected Family Contribution (EFC). School costs minus the EFC equals financial need.

Bet you didn't even care about that tonight. :P

27. Well, it's most likely two things...
1) There have been a large number of idiotic changes to the Federal regulations (go figure---:P), and schools have had to scramble to make them work. The poor schmucks that make awards (i.e. the Financial Aid Office staff) have had a nightmare situation this summer to put things into place. 2) If drop/add isn't over yet, they are probably waiting until then to assess your class schedule at that time so they can pay you. Otherwise, they're liable under Federal regulations to return money to the Federal programs on your behalf if you drop out; also, they'd have to chase you down to have you return money if they paid you for more classes than you actually took, and they'd be out a lot of money. If drop/add's over, they may be waiting on lenders to disburse loan funds.

These are the most common reasons for something like that. :)

29. Interesting
#2 isn't really an issue here, cause I'm a medical student so my cost of education is extremely prescribed and inflexible. And almost no one drops out of medical school since you would literally never be able to pay back your outstanding loan debt without a doctor's salary.

I wonder if #1 is the case here. I know this is the first academic year where grad students could apply for federal PLUS loans entirely on their own, and a lot of my money is supposed to come through that. Most med schools have safeguard systems in place to loan interest-free money to students to pay their rent and for groceries and so on until loan money comes in, but no dice here, sadly.

Thanks for the info!

36. Bingo.
The Grad PLUS program is great in theory but a nightmare in practice. Hell, the Feds haven't even changed the Master Promissory Note---it still has the parent section and the student section separately. Technically, those notes are invalid, because the "parent" isn't the borrower. However, until the powers that be (read: FReepers and other assorted Hugh Morans) issue a revised prom note, that'll just have to do. They have schools collect addenda for the notes in the case of Grad PLUS, but that's just a temporary measure (supposedly).

I'm just waiting for the Feds to come back after the schools have worked out all the bugs and say, "Oops, sorry, it didn't work. Too bad. We're not going to continue Grad PLUS after all." :eyes: It's happened before on other programs, and I'm also expecting it to happen to the undergrad Academic Competitiveness Grants and a couple of other programs.

38. huh...that's very interesting
I wondered about that very thing when I signed my promissory note, cause lord knows my parents didn't have anything to do with this.

From a selfish point of view, I hope they keep the program until I finish school just cause the interest rate and deferral policies are much better for me than a private loan would be. And with the amounts of money we're talking about here, the interest payments could really become enormous. :scared:

That is when major changes are allowed. 2004 was when the last Reauthorization was supposed to occur, but it didn't happen until about eight or nine months ago. Next one is due in 2010.

Lips as sweet as ervina

Violets from the street vendor for the one I adore
So that she will remember I am hers evermore
Kisses thrilling and tender tell me as never before
All my love I surrender true my bella amore

Bella bella bambina
Bella bella bambina
Mandolins are playing songs of love they are saying
Bella bella bambina
Lips as sweet as ervina
Bella bella bambina
Bella bambina be mine

Chapel bells will be ringing when she whispers si si
How my heart will be singing love's sweet melody
Skies above will be bringing sunshine and gladness to me
Shoes and rice they'll be flinging what a day it will be

112. Sounds like a bullsh** excuse to me
Campbell's Soup spokesman John Faulkner said: "We made the decision not to advertise on "Survivor" back during the upfront based on the fact that the demographics of the show don't align as well for us as other CBS shows, so it is not as efficient a buy." When Campbell put together its list, "Survivor" didn't make the cut compared to other shows that have a greater appeal to women, he said.

What the hell are they talking about??? Women LOVE Survivor!! Sounds to me like they don't think black, latino, or asian people buy their crap soup.

I think it will work out nicely this year. There is CERTAINLY a much higher minority representation, unlike previous years when all the had was the token black guy (and lately girl too) and one token "other". God forbid we see more than one ethnic person in a prime time show :sarcasm: . Prime time television follows such a formula (1-2 token "ethnics") that this kinda tosses it on it's ear. And, given the past Survivor formulas, the teams will combine in a short time and I think they will have a greater ethnic mix in the end days of the game, which is all to the good, in my opinion.

118. that's a great point
I keep waiting for a real world where the minority is white or heterosexual.

I just think it will be more stressful and worrisome for racial minorities and therefore puts them at an unfair advantage in the competition. I also haven't liked any of the survivors that are about anything other than every unique individual for themselves, they get boring when all that other stuff is focused on.

37. Dragonflies can mate while in flight....

I also read in I think National Geographic that once a male and female mate another male could come along and do something to the female so she loses the eggs she has so he can mate with her......
I'll keep trying to find something that explains this better :)
Dragonflies along with butterflies are my absolute favorite thing to see. They are ancient and beautiful.

"In mating, the male and female form a 'wheel' position: The male gets in front and clasps the head of the female with the claspers at the end of his abdomen; the female is behind and bends her abdomen downward to the secondary genitalia of the male where she will receive his sperm. Dragonflies can mate while perched but can also (and often do) mate while in flight. The male is often present while the female lays her eggs so that other male competition will not disturb her. The female uses her ovipositor to lay the eggs on or into aquatic plants. If she does not have an ovipositor, she will disperse her eggs on the surface of the water." -

This is from our family history:

The Two Final Christmases at Geradstetten

1853

This Christmas was forward looking one; the proposed journey to America, land of promise, by the two elder children in grandfathers family. So far away from home and a long and tiresome trip by sail for the 14 and 16 year old _*_*_*_s. To John and Ricka it meant a great adventure. How the parents might plan and the sisters and brother dream of the day when they too, might be reunited in this wonderful America. While father was 3 years, 3 months and 10 days of age, our mother to be, May Ann Barbara Brubaker, born this side of the Atlantic, was 4 months, 6 days old, this Christmas.

49. Tree squirrels are afraid of ground squirrels
Edited on Fri Sep-01-06 09:28 PM by Gormy Cuss
(Fox) squirrels live in our yard all year. They lope across the lawn, nibble on tomatoes, and climb trees to harvest fruit and also to chatter.

EXCEPT when a ground squirrel decides to move in. Ground squirrels burrow, eat fruit, and don't seem to compete in any other obvious way. For reasons that are unclear to us, the tree squirrels leave until the ground squirrel moves on (we trap and release ground squirrels because their tunneling behavior kills plants and can leave holes perfectly sized to twist one's ankle. )

I don't think I've ever seen a ground squirrel... looks kinda like a rabbit with a tail! I wonder what it is that makes the tree squirrels feel so threatened.

They are very common in our local parks. They're favorite food for the coyotes, which may explain why a few wander down from the hills to backyards.

50. There are lions native to India.
Edited on Fri Sep-01-06 09:36 PM by seawolf
Albeit not very many.

Google reveals they're a subspecies (Asiatic lion) that is slightly smaller than the African lion, and has a couple minor physical differences. They're the lions that originally lived in Greece, Anatolia, and the Middle East.

Additionally, due to the smaller prey in India, the lions generally don't form prides, only male-female hunting pairs.

There's only 300-odd left in the wild, and only 60 in zoos. An Indian prince, very enlightened for the time, created a national park (Gir Forest) in the 1910's for the few who survived the hunts of the 19th century and a backlash to livestock kills around the turn of the century.

62. When appraising a home, the value of the land should only count
in most instances as 1/3rd of the total value. i.e. In a $300,000 home the land should only contribute $100,000 to the total value. Of course, you throw all of that out when appraising in higher end, uber desirable neighborhoods, like Grosse Pointe, Birmingham, MI, and many neighborhoods in So Cal. :hi:

69. Any time. I always encourage new home buyers to go to the city
office and request the field sheet/public records (sometimes they are online now) for homes they are interested in. It will give them the taxes, tax rate, land value, SEV, and REAL Sq. Ft. of the home. Real Estate Agents sometimes (not always) exagerate these things because homeowners give them the wrong info. If a home is listed at 1500 sq. ft. it's quite possible it's only 1401. A big deal to some people.

I know it is for the area that I live in, and it's neat to look at, even just out of curiosity. While I wouldn't find the # of sf to be such a big deal, much more how a house feels to me, but I can see how it might be a big deal to some people.

83. The man who founded the Grand Canyon Railway
His name was William Owen "Bucky" O'Neill. After he conceived of the idea of building a track from Williams, AZ to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, he struggled for a few years to persuade investors to put up the capital for such a venture.

When a group finally got the ball rolling, he signed up to serve with Teddy Roosevelt as one of the Rough Riders of the Spanish-American War. While in Cuba, he was moving down the line inspecting his troops, when a Spanish sharpshooter picked him off, killing him instantly.

It wasn't long after that the railroad was approved by the territorial legislature of Arizona, and Bucky O'Neill never lived to see his idea come to fruition.

He was the mayor of Prescott, AZ when he was scheming to make more money. The usual venues were investing in copper mines and the like. He knew that railroads were a risky venture, but lucrative if you got the right one at the right time.

Predictably a cocky sort. His men tried warning them that he was vulnerable to Spanish fire if he stood where he was, and he shrugged them off, saying no Spanish bullet is made that could take him down. Famous last words!

He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, which isn't a bad gig.

Accompinied by two bottles of San Miquel beer, imported from the Phillipines. A very nice lager.

Now I'm confused because this site calls them a whale but also says they're a member of the Dolphin family. Hmmm.

"The orca or killer whale is a toothed whale and is a member of the Dolphin family (it is the largest dolphin). There are 3 distinct species of these warm blooded, air breathing mammals: Resident Killer Whales, Transient Killer whales, and Off-shore Killer Whales. The main factors which set each species apart are - social behavior, physical appearance, preferred food, and vocal dialects. At this stage, there is little known of the Off-Shore species of Killer Whales as they are seldom seen in protected coastal waters. Although the travelling ranges of Residents Killer Whales, Transients Killer Whales, and Off-shores Killer Whales overlap, they have never been seen to mix."

And this site says the same thing: "Factoid: The orca, or "killer," whale is the largest member of the dolphin family."

So, maybe it's possible to be a whale and a dolphin at the same time? :eyes:

127. Donovan sang back up on an Alice Cooper song
The song was "Billion Dollar Babies"

Strange little factoid considering that Donovan was a folkie.

128. The voice of Sesame Street's Elmo character...
...is provided by a 6-foot tall African-American man. And no, it's not James Earl Jones.

To get the voice up that high, I figured it was some dainty woman who did the voice, like Bart Simpson or Rocky the Squirrel. Then again, I guess Howie Mandel did that character of his (Bobby?) and it sounded like the air squealing out of a baloon.
