I donated platelets (blood product) yesterday and I watch movies while I do this. Usually if the movie runs over I hang around to finish but yeserday I had another appointment so I had to leave. I saw it up to the point where Will took that gal to meet his friends; thanks.

needle in arm for 80 minutes (double dose) - they take out the blood, spin it to separate the platelets, then put the blood back in my arm - up until last year they used a needle in each arm to do this - the platelets are given to people who need help with blood clotting, such as people undergoing chemotherapy

She gave her platelets.....these are a blood product.

They function in your body as the first responders when you are bleeding.

They start the clotting cascade.......they make the beginnings of the fibrous clot.

In the 1970's, it was discovered that single donor platelets were better for the patients who needed them........

So machines were invented where a donor could recline...

And a kit was put in the machine, and then small needles were placed in each arm (one to remove the blood, and one to return it)...

The machine spun the blood, and the platelets were separated out. The rest of the blood was returned to the donor via tubings.....

Painless and reasonably quick.......I do it whenever I can.

I have just been out of the whole medical thing for so long and now that I have to do this surgery Tues, I am more aware of all this life stuff that I never paid attention to. Not that I am worried about kicking the bucket, it is just reminding me of a realization that there is medicine and medical problems.

But I don't seem to yield as well..

Plus you get all that rush of anticoagulant at the end, at least on the Amicus you do, and that makes me all tingly.......

And not the good kind of tingly either!

So I do dual-needle, and it works much better...... :shrug:

Yes, the needles don't bother me either.....besides, those are waaay smaller than the ones used for whole blood.......

And I have good veins!

The vampires love my draw side..the return one is smaller, but still gettable!

they usually get a double out of me and sometimes a triple - I mess with the blood people just like I mess with everyone else - for example post-donation Eduardo gave me the usual spiel about no smoking, no drinking for a while I told him I was gonna smoke a cigarette, drink a whiskey and f*** a drug dealer - he covered his ears and said I'M NOT LISTENING SUSAN!!! :D
