Mirren's Emmy Crack Draws FCC Complaint
Another example of people getting upset about the most trivial things

PTC claims award winner's language was indecent

The Parents Television Council called on federal regulators Thursday to fine NBC for "vulgar and obscene" comments by two actresses during Sunday's broadcast of the Primetime Emmy Awards.

Walking up to the stage to accept a best actress Emmy for HBO's "Elizabeth I," Helen Mirren commented on her relief that she didn't go "ass over tit" as she came up the stairs. A few minutes later, Calista Flockhart repeated the phrase before presenting another award.

The comments aired before 10 p.m. in the Central and Mountain time zones, when federal law prevents obscene language on over-the-air broadcasts.

1. It's a British expression.
Harmless, really. Certainly not obscene. Vulgar, in the common sense, maybe. But not obscene.

2. I love Helen Mirren.....
and that comment only confirms my admiration. She's a great actress. Loved her as Jane Tennison and in lots of other roles.

3. "When asked about the 2 million children worldwide dead of malaria
each year, which would be easily treatable by the United States for the cost of a few tanks, and the hundreds of thousands of babies killed in American bombing since the war in Iraq started, the PTC only response was 'we are more worried about the effects of blue language on our white CHRISTIAN children here in America, you communists'."

5. "Ass" and "tits" aren't obscene or profane
They can be considered vulgar, but that's it.

9. She also made a beautiful speech about well-written...
...screenplays with great parts for women. Ms. Mirren pointed out that her fellow nominees had great roles. Noting that females make up half the population, perhaps more, she urged writers to continue coming up with terrific parts for women. That was what made the greatest impression on me, not her comment about not having tripped.

But look what the FCC cares about. Sigh.
