Do you wear contact lenses?
I used to wear B&L's Optima FW until my eye doctor said my eyes would be healthier in the new silicone hydrogel lenses with more oxygen. He gave me a trial for 02 Optix which sucked. I think the base curve was wrong. He then gave me a trial of Acuvue Oasys.

These lenses were great and very comfortable. The only problem is they are pretty pricey. The doctor in the office wanted $35 per box, when I could buy then online for around $22. What a scam they have going in the eye doctor's offices. I never buy my contacts from them, ever.

10. I do that , too.
I order enough for a year, but when I'm on my last pair I usually have to wait awhile before I can afford another year's worth. If I clean them well every night, they can last four months!

13. there was a lawsuit a while back about this
the contact lens companies were manufacturing the same lens and selling them as 2 week, 1 month, and yearly disposables.

The only problem with using contacts longer than the recommended replacement is protein deposits. You need to use some kind of protein cleaner. Also, I wouldn't go overboard. Using a 2 week contact to a month is usually OK but longer than that can give you problems sometimes.

A lot of those fungal eye infections people got a few months ago that was from the bad Renu contact solution was because of poor contact lens hygeine. A lot of bacteria can grow on contacts that aren't replaced and regularly cleaned properly.

That also means replacing your contact lens case every few months as well.

18. That's bad for your eyes. You can damage them.
By cutting off oxygen to the blood vessels. You don't want to do that.

23. I've been doing it for years -- it's fine
Wearing them longer has nothing to do with oxygen getting to your eye -- the contacts just get a little grungier at about three - four months.

There was even a class action suit showing what a scam contacts are in the "disposable" time.

3. I really like the Acuvue Hydraclear.
I tried the O2 Optics. They were too thick. Actually, I think whoever makes them gives the doctors a cut of the proceeds or something because the office I went to push them hardcore. They SUCK. But I've been extremely happy with Acuvue.

6. are those the ones
that you sleep in for one month?

I could never sleep in my contacts. my eyes get bloodshot red even if I take a little nap for an hour or two, doesn't matter what lens. It always happens.

7. I don't think so.
I've slept in them a couple times (on days when I have to get up extra-early and don't want to have to fight with them in the morning, etc.), but I don't think they're made for that purpose. :hi:

8. Me too.
I don't want to mess with contacts. I just grab my glasses and put on in the morning and I'm good. I've worn glasses for 45 years and my face has matured around wearing glasses. With contacts I look like a person who wears glasses who has contacts in.

9. I prolly would, too
I've worn glasses for about 40 years, with a short stint with contacts in college/grad school.

I'm just used to the ol' spectacles.

12. You must remember
that many doctor's offices do not have special pricing such as 800-contacts. They are charged MUCH More than places buying bulk.

The O.D's are given samples by the manufacturer for patients to try, there are no "special prizes" or "kick-backs".

It's kind of like the Wal-mart syndrome, Mom and pop grocers cannot keep the low prices of large chains.

If you truly think your Doctor is screwing you, I'd look for another OD.

15. I do
Last eye exam, I got monthly disposables...I'll never buy them again.

They don't hold any fluid and hence uncomfortable, tear easily and there are times when it takes me 10 minutes to get one contact out. I've been wearing contacts since the mid-80's, and have never had problems until this pair.

Cheap crap, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm due for another eye exam; I won't be getting disposables. I'm okay with the daily rigamarole, and weekly protein cleanings, etc.

16. I've worn them since 1976
but wear glasses more than half the time -- whatever my mood is when I'm getting my teeth brushed and stuff. Those extended wear contacts were a bad idea except for those days a person ***MAY** have no choice but to wear their contacts over night once in a while. I have extended wear contacts but my eye-care providers said, don't sleep in your contacts. And I don't because they hurt like hell when you wake up in them which reminds me in my younger days I used to like to drink and I'd forget to take them off before going to sleep. (This was before they invented the kind you can sleep in.)

And these are supposed to be disposable but I pay no attention--- I just wear them til they start bothering me, usually one of them gets bad overnight for some reason and then I toss them both and grab another pair so a year supply will last me longer unless of course my eyes get worse in which case I may not know about it because I don't notice it but I never go to the eye doctor until such time as I have issues seeing or running out of contact lenses. (I also had heard there is no REAL difference between the disposable ones and the ones that are supposed to last you a year. They'll sell you wantever you want to buy, I guess!??)

But!

I am now very suddenly getting far-sighted while I have always been near-sighted but I am I am still near-sighted too which means I can't see a danged thing unless it's large enough print, and less than 2 and-a 1/2 feet but more than 2 feet away, and in a bright light, and holy moly it's strange to suddenly feel you're half blind and made totally helpless whenever confronted with fine print.

Don't sleep in your contacts! Wash your hands with soap before taking them off or putting them on! And by the time the disposable ones need a protein-eater, it's really time to toss them and open the next pair.

19. Yeah, except my eyes are so bad and I have astigmatism
so a lot of Contant lens companies don't make contacts powerful enough for my eyes. If my eyes get any worse, I'm going to have to go back to these shitty toric contacts I used to have that last 3 months (quarterly). I hate them.

You wanna know what else sucks? I'm not a candidate for laser surgery because my corneas are too damn flat. My optomotrist and opthamologist told me that eyes like mine degenerate after laser surgeries (too flat), so they aren't done on my kind of eye anymore. Unless they make advances in surgery, I'm stuck.

24. They do now -- the new Torics
My left eye is really bad, and the Torics are strong enough AND help the astigmatism. They have little weights in them to help them settle.

And, I can't get laser surgery, either -- too flat -- SUCKS!!!!!

20. Yes, AccuVues.
Wore them almost exclusively since I first tried the
high-oxy extendedwears 15 years ago, until recently.

I wore glasses since 3rd grade, but my prescription
was a real coke-bottle affair, and the weight made
them a total PITA. The soft contacts were a real godsend.

But 3 years ago, I found the coolest pair of NOS 1960s-vintage
frames, and just had to buy them. And I found out that lens
tech has come a long way; the Doc hooked me up with some
high-refraction plastic lenses that are just feather-light.

And I got so many compliments on the glasses that I wear them all
the time now, unless I'm doing something that requires having
my face free. (Like welding, cuz the helmet doesnt fit over glasses well,
or just working outside in Summer- SWEAT makes that a contact lens activity)

21. Per box? Dude, my contact lenses cost over $600 for one pair. I only
get one pair a year of course. I have to clean them daily and treat them like fine china. If I tear or lose one, too bad. Cash only buys me more and it takes between 5 & 10 days once they're ordered.

Consider yourself fortunate!

22. Dailies here for about 50% of the time.
I used to wear monthly lenses - but found the cleaning a nuisance, particularly as it was in just before bed when I'm half asleep already.

No fuss or mess, the box appears every couple of months paid for automatically...

I wear glasses the other half of the time.
