We explored the North rim for about a week as the fires waxed and wained late last June. On June 24th we hiked down the North Kiabab to Phantom Ranch, then up the Bright Angel Trail the next day. We took the shuttle back to the north rim the next day and got out just hours before the road was temporarily closed

Fire. The North Canyon fire late Sunday afternoon. We just made it out before they closed the road. I stopped to take pictures of the smoke column, and got really spooked when we heard the low frequency roar of the approaching fire.
