Pickled beets recalled in eight states
(Atlanta) Greenwood pickled beets distributed in eight states, including Georgia, are being recalled because some jars may contain bits of Harry Lester James. Agrilink Foods Incorporated of Rochester, New York, said yesterday it is recalling 35-hundred cases of the beets distributed in Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Harry Lester James had worked at Agrilink Foods beet packing plant for over fifteen years. "A good employee was Harry," says Agrilink beet packing foreman, Wendell Tambrey. "I recall the day when he found what looked like glass in one of the jars. That was really something."

The "glass" turned out to be Agrilink employee, Mavis Chapman, who slipped and fell into an industrial-sized mashing and packing machine.

Agrilink has issued more than thirteen recalls in the past four years because of accidents resulting in employees' contamination of Agrilink products. The affected beets are Greenwood Sliced Pickled Beets in 16-ounce jars and carry a lot number that begins 9-A-H-0-1 followed by a four-digit time stamp and then M-2-K-P-6. The company says it was alerted to the problem by consumers.

The James family has requested the returned pickled beets for a proper burial.

1. Does the FDA have an "acceptable" level of human remains in food?

I know they do for bug parts and rat mistake.

2. Pickled beets...
...are processed at high temperatures and pressures so they're sterile and shelf-stable, so they should be fairly safe to eat. But to really do things right, they need to file a thermal process for beets + human remains, redo their labels to include human remains on the ingredients list and calorie count, and have USDA inspectors on site since there is now meat in the product.

(as they say on fark.com, I'm going to hell...)

3. Seriously, though,
...a lot of people need to lose their jobs over this. Plant engineering, for not making the area around the chopper safer. Line supervisors, for not training the poor woman better, and for not stopping the line at the time of the accident and sending everyone home except the cleaning crew.

5. Yum... pickled beets

Pickled Beets are a southern staple: sweet, spicy, and you can tie-dye with the juice. :D Much better than plain cooked beets. Yuck!

6. I love their pickled beets
but I really love their Harvard Beets, quartered cut in a sweet & tangy sauce.

The label boasts "original recipe".......never would have guessed just how original. :wow:
