Poll question: Which version of Willy Wonka is your favorite?
Which one reings supreme? Johnny Depp vs. Gene Wilder - which one is t3h haXX0r?

If you want to turn it into a referendum on David L. Wolper vs. Tim Burton, that's also fine with me. ginbarn and I just saw both versions back to back today, and she's partial to Depp. But what's your opinion? Which Wonka is the reigning champ?

1. The Futurama Version.
You don't want to know where Slurm originates.

2. Gene Wilder
Hands down. Depp's is okay...but it can't hold a candle, IMO, to Wilder's. Wilder captured more of the innocence...Depp's is darker.

I dozed off on Depp. As often as I've seen the first version, I don't think I've ever fallen asleep.

3. Well, I honestly don't really like the original that much.
Also, the new one has Johnny Depp, albeit a weird Laura Bush lookalike version, but Johnny is the man I want to marry.

4. I think half the women on DU would run off with Johnny in a heartbeat
That goes for some of the guys, too.

Me, I'd be perfectly fine if he was my next-door neighbor. Even if I had to move to France.

6. I like Wilder's portrayal better, but I like the new Charlie better.
I actally like the new movie better overall. The first one seemed waaaaay too long at some points, like the mother's solo, and that annoying Candy Man song.

7. I can't watch Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka after watching Johnny Depp...
He's so much truer to the literary version than Wilder's. And he's so creepy. And I love Johnny Depp. There are two people in the world that if I met I would probably lose my shit: Bill Clinton and Johnny Depp.

8. The wilder version is classic and will never be forgotten.
I don't think you can say the same of Tim Burton's attempt, even though it was an okay film when judged against its contemporaries.

12. I agree.
I didn't dislike Tim Burton's version, but the original is a classic.

9. Honestly, I like them both
They both have their strengths and weaknesses, but both were able to pull of a stare of mad determination that totally made their interpretations of the Wonka character.

Wilder: "Swifter than eagles! Stronger than lions!"

Depp: "It's the best gum in the whole wide world. Know why? KNOW WHY?"

Wilder: His routine of teasingly denying everyone access to the Chocolate Room until his gracious bow.

Depp: His "staring contest" with Mr. Salt, where two businessmen sized each other up - and Wonka won.

13. Gene Wilder.
I grew up with that movie, and while the Johnny Depp version was entertaining, nothing will replace the Gene Wilder version.

14. Gene Wilder hands down
True Magic.

Depp lacked the sense of wonder required for the role that Wilder had in spades.

15. I picked option 3
The original is a classic and I love it for that, but the Depp version is much truer to the book IMO. Roald Dahl is one of my favorite authors and Depp followed Dahl closer than Wilder did (though I love him all the same). Also, the Burton version just had more of that surreal Dahl "feel".

16. The original had one of the best lines ever
Remember when they were getting ready to go into the Chocolate Room, and everyone was complaining about the size of the door they thought they had to go through? Wilder's Wonka told them, "in this room all my dreams become realities...and some of my realities become dreams."

Everyone needs a Chocolate Room--a place where all your dreams can become realities.
