and even done it on TV. I've been accused of all five of your choices. I'd hope that, when I die, 'death wish' and 'nutcase' won't be words bandied about in my memory.

Although my background has variances with Steve's -- I spent most of my adult life in academia -- in him I definitely recognized a kindred spirit, and when it comes down to it he was a true nature lover, a naturalist in the classic sense, and a tireless promoter of preservation, conservation, and respect for the natural world. He knew he could get the message out through TV if he did it right. We need more people in this world who have even a little of his passion about the environment and about the organisms that comprise and shape it...at least in part through the influences of his various TV franchises, we have a few more of those people around now.

I salute the dude. I wish he was still around. He was a good man.

20. Well said. Here's what I admired most about him:

He got people to look at "bad" animals like crocs and venomous snake in a different way, and realize that they're not evil creatures that should be exterminated upon sight. Un-villifying an animal like a crocodile is no small thing, and at a time when our ecosystems grow more and more fragile, his accomplishment was an important one.

All of god's creatures need love, after all.

It's one thing to talk seriously about what his contributions were, and whether his risk-taking was necessary; it's quite another to just randomly list a bunch of two-word descriptors, most of which are pejoratively slanted, and then feign innocence and surprise when people call bullshit on it (especially right on the cusp of the news of his death). Kinda tacky.

There's a lot of species-ism out there and conservation efforts in years past were primarily directed not only a single species (rarely a good way to go) but were, even if only for pragmatic reasons, focused on soft and furry animals. Even predators like the tiger were, at least, beautiful to behold in their grace and power and were warm blooded.

There's a good reason why the symbol of the World Wildlife Fund has always been the panda.

Steve took people for a walk on the wild side. What he did for children, through those shows of his directed largely at young audiences (i used to enjoy them, too) will, I hope, help ensure that the next batch of voting citizens do that much better a job with environmental matters than did each of the generations before them.

Steve Irwin did some good. His message was a good one. The over-the-top approach ensured people would stick around long enough to learn something. He made money along the way? Good for him.

The playing around with animals demystified some of them -- there're a lot of myths about so-called 'dangerous' animals -- an dif he got zapped by one he immediately stressed that the 'attack' was purely defensive and entirely his fault. He sensationalized, as is pretty much necessary to hold many people's attention, but not in the "look at this vicious gecko, capable of tearing my arm off" way common to some older nature shows.

I had my issues with Steve Irwin. He seemed to be a right wing conservative politically in some issues and he called our neo-con Prime Minister the "best Prime Minister ever" and as a result got an invitation to a exclusive function with * when he visited Australia in 2003. For that reason, I will confess I was deterred from following his work closely

But I would never, never, doubt his compassion, his integrity, his sincerity, his generosity of spirit and his sincere commitment and devotion to what he did. Nor would I ever doubt or be cynical about the deep and profound love he had for conservation and for his wife and children. He did much to educate people about nature and conservation and to enhance people's understanding of wildlife. And I am very sad that Steve Irwin had so much promise, so much potential and so much hope for the future and was essentially cut short in his prime. He was a great man in many ways and he made the world a better place in his own way.

I am devastated at his loss and I profoundly grieve for his wife and children. I'm devastated that his children have lost such a wonderful, dedicated and devoted father and that his wife has lost such a loving husband -I saw interviews with them both together and their devotion and affection for each other was deep and profound. I think this is an enormous tragedy -just as I think every life lost is an enormous tragedy -and I grieve for someone who did his job in trying to promote understanding and empathy for the world around us

RIP Steve Irwin and may your legacy endure.
