This afternoon, I saw a guy taking his boa constrictor for a walk

7. A red-eared slider, named Nanashi

I've heard from other people that a lot of sliders are bite-y and not the friendliest of pets, but Nanashi was a sweetheart, and social. I used to bring him with me when I worked in environmental education at a summer camp. He was always tolerant to allow himself to be pet by camper children and adults with mental disabilities. Any time someone walked into my room, he'd wander over to the side of his tank and watch them. And he liked to stare at toes if you wiggled them near the glass.

A couple of my coworkers wanted to see him and he's well-behaved, so I brought him in on a day when I only had to go in for a couple hours.

8. I have three.

He's Spot (I kept the name that the breeders kids gave him) and the females are Killer and Stumpy (so named for the fight they got in as babies). I was really disappointed because they laid eggs this year (all fertile) and the incubator fritzed out and I lost them. It would have been so cool to have little gecko babies.

The pet shop that I trade fish with was going to barter with me for them too. It's nice having a really good local petshop. He specializes in African Cichlid fish (what I have) and almost all his fish were bred by him or local breeders. They cost a little bit more, but they are much healthier than the farmed fish. Also since he doesn't sell them as "Assorted Cichlids" none of them are hybrids.

Pretty much, provided you have females in with the male, they'll breed. I might get another female, too. Their tank is big enough for me to have four females in there. If I bought a high-yellow lavender female, I would get some really nice looking babies that would sell for a decent amount.

Carrying a boa constrictor, though? That's pretty cool. I like snakes, I just couldn't handle having to feed one mice, frozen rats (live rats have been known to kill small boas), and baby chicks.

I used to just buy frozen mice and thaw them. I'm not even a meat eater (aside from fish). A carnivore should really be able to handle that.

Dip the dead mouse/rat in it. First I saw it on a tv show about a snake rehab place, where the guy said it makes the snakes go crazy for the food. Then, I found out one of my friends was doing it with his snakes. It's quite bizarre, but there's something about the scent of it, that makes the snake go crazy.

i have done this, walked a boa.

i volunteered at a animal rescue as a kid. the shelter was there to care for injured or abandoned wild animals.

there were a three boas that people had abandoned. one of my responsibilities was to take them out for fresh air.

my friend, who also volunteered there, eventually ended up adopting two of the boas...

so i continued to see them even after they left the shelter.

I agree that certain animals should not be pets. However, certain animals which are bred in captivity, like most boa constrictors and iguanas, wouldn't stand a chance in the wild unless very careful steps were taken to reintroduce them. Still, there are a lot of people who purchase animals like these without realizing how difficult it is to take care of them...especially as they grow in size.

It might be best to require licenses for people to own them and breed them.

41. Alligators and boa constrictors are very different.

The alligator is something that pretty much no one can properly care for in their home. The average person however will have the space & money to take care of a boa. The boa is also way less dangerous. However, I don't believe people should be allowed to keep burmese/reticulated pythons or anacondas as pets unless they can seriously prove to the state that they have the means and the skills to properly care for it. Gators are even harder to properly care for.

I used to have a ball python. They only get to be about 5' and they got their name from the fact that they curl up into a bowl when threatened instead of attacking. The only thing you need to care for one of those is a standard permit from the state (which is basically on the honor system). I'm fine with that for small/medium constrictors.

When that happens, it is very bad for the local fauna. I lived in an apartment complex where one snake escaped (I think it was a boa) and lived in the attic for a while. The tried to catch but don't know if they succeeded. I moved.

It's recommended that the cages be kept locked for larger snakes, so they can't nose their way out. Even with my ball python, I kept the cage padlocked.

seriously though, once at Bele Chere (a music festival in NC) this idiot was walking around with an albino burmese python (it's held in July) and they don't have any protection just like human albinos, apparently, and the snake got sunburned and bit the guy in the face. He latched his lower teeth or fangs or whatever under the guy's jaw and the upper ones right around his cheekbone and the cops had to come and I think they took them both to the hospital because they couldn't get the snake to let go. Talk about stupid. It was one of those huge burmese. They are really pretty, but people should educate themselves if they have a pet.

I was going to post a pic but I don't have to since it's the kind of snake that Britney Spears used to imply a phallus with on whatever stupid show she did that on. Yellow and white.
