I'm drinking a toast to a great conservationist. Steve Irwin.

I saw Steve put himself in harm's way hundreds of times. It's obvious he profited from his shows, but to me, his love of nature was foremost. Here's to Steve Irwin.

1. I'm not entirely sure I agree with his "benign" nature,

and I made my own post separating that from the others, but he had one hell of a fun, engaging personality (which is what made him famous) and he'll be missed by all.

...rather than the animal. What the hell. He was a grown man and he got wildlife before the people. Here's to you, Steve Irwin, and me. :-)

I tend to agree - he definitely did educate. Sometimes a too direct approach and did he often have to tease the animals on occasion? (and what if that croc did get a free lunch of "baby-back ribs" from his own baby?)

I'll admit I've been pretty bummed through most of the day upon hearing this and I don't bum that easy. But we raised our son with a hefty helping of Animal Planet and Irwin was always a staple of our TV time and he will be missed.

I think he helped reinforce my not being terrified of reptiles and other creatures people generally hate, but instead respecting them. I've always liked his wife, too, and I feel very bad for her.

I have been in a strange shocked depressed state all day long. Damn anybody who would talk ill of him too. I have heard some comments by other people that make me want to take a swing at them. What Steve did for animals will be noticeable in his absence.

So for Steve: I'll miss you. You were a great conservationist and a great person. I only wish there could be one who could fill your shoes, but unfortunately, there are so few people willing to risk their own lives to educate people so maybe, just maybe, they won't needlessly kill critters who are less than fuzzy and cuddley.
