One of the largest media companies in the world is flexing its muscle to stop anyone using a phrase beginning with the words: "Pimp my ...".

Viacom, which owns MTV, the worldwide music channel, has sent threatening legal letters to a website about children' sweets and a shop that sells treats for pets, which it believes are trying to rip off its hit MTV programme Pimp My Ride. The show takes old cars and customises them in an attempt to make them look stylish.

MTV that has sought to register as trade marks the show's title and the phrase "Pimp my ..." The company sent warning letters to the website Pimp My Snack, in which people share recipes for giant versions of confectionery.

Viacom also perceived a threat to its show in Wilmslow, Cheshire, where Liz Wilson had opened a luxury boutique for pets offering clothing, collars and food, named Pimp My Pet. When Viacom's lawyers warned her this summer to change the name, she agreed: "It was a choice of spending £400 to change the logo against thousands of pounds fighting, and potential bankruptcy." She is consulting a lawyer before announcing the new name for her store.

As of 3rd June 2006 'Pimp My Snack' has changed its name to 'Pimp That Snack'

Why?

On the 17th May 2006 we received a letter from legal representatives of Viacom International Inc. advising us that they consider the use of 'Pimp My Snack' to be a breach of their trademark application number E4279493 which covers usage of the words 'Pimp My', and also E3992724 for 'Pimp My Ride'.

When I applied for a trademark on "Low-Budget Radio Network," they basically claimed that since someone else, at one time, used the words "Low Budget" and "Radio" together on one web page before I applied, then my application was invalid.

Of course, Viacom has a lot more money to spend, so I have no doubt that they'll be allowed to trademark a really generic term.
