Wow.
I hope the people bashing the Crocodile Hunter get a terminal case of genital herpes.

Or Ebola.

Choices, choices...

(yes, I feel VERY strongly on this)

I'm trying to think about the good things in nature...and the good in those who love it!

Did you see my thread about Australia? Here's the link: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x5590535

2. I like the argument that he had it coming ...
and that he tempted death all the time. Umm hello experts we all have it coming - we all tempt death with everything that we do.

3. that arguement doesn't bother me
Because, well, he DID have it coming :)

No, I'm pissed at the people who think he DAMAGED the conservation effort or "molested" the animals :eyes:

They have no idea how many people (myself included) he has inspired to continue the conservation movement.

6. Most people are idiots
I wonder if these same people will say the same shit when Jane Goodall dies. I bet she molested the chimps she was studying too. :eyes:

22. I can't find a picture of the Far Side cartoon about Jane Goodall, but
she loved the cartoon and used it in a talk of hers that I went to (she also has it on T-shirts sold to benefit her foundation). I met her after the talk -- what she did with those chimps was remarkable, no matter how uptight you might be about 'scientific rigor' (whatever the f*** that is) -- and what she has done since is admirable beyond all bounds. She is a nice lady, too.

7. He was cool.
Some people just like to be offended. He had a great way with kids, my son loved him. He was excited about what he was doing and
it was contagious. That's how you get children interested in conservation and biodiversity and all. Not by being boring and holier-than-thou.
But that's just MHO.

Do you feel better now?

18. ok, don't take this personally HP
But when you say I have no social life and nobody wants me, you really piss me off. You do NOT have to be alone, you just keep repeating it and you refuse to believe you deserve happiness. Yes, you DO deserve happiness because you DESERVE it-- you're a great guy, but you NEED to NOT be so hard on yourself.

I am just saying that I am not surprised to see him die like the way he did based upon him living that lifestyle.

14. But the way he died is extremely rare
It was a freak accident that could happen to anyone diving around stingrays although chances are very very slim.

17. Your biggest danger from stingrays is from stepping on them
Any place on the Gulf or Atlantic coasts, there is a greater risk of a stingray injury than shark attack. The lie buried in the sand and if you put your foot down on the barb, it will go right through. Rays are not aggressive so it's not like they will jump up and attack you. Some rays get very large too.

to wish terminal herpes or ebola on people, just because they disagree with your opinion about a dead celebrity?

20. I admit I have little familiarity with his work
Although I don't live in a bubble either. My heart sank when I read the headlines last night. :-(

It is my understanding that he did a lot for educating both children and adults on the marvels of nature, and worked hard for efforts which protected the habitats of animals worldwide.

I remember the flap over his holding his child while feeding a crocodile, and I reserved judgment, not knowing what he does about the limitations of what a crocodile is capable of in those circumstances. I did not think less of him for that incident.

I do know that what happened this weekend was a fluke of nature. Death by a stingray's strike is exceedingly rare - it was one of only three in Australia's recorded history. It was not carelessness or bravado that brought on his untimely demise. It was his closeness to nature and eagerness to share its wonders with us that led to his tragic fate.

He died doing what he did best: Sharing a wider, deeper world that is ours to cherish and grasp.

My heart goes out to his family, his friends, and his many fans worldwide, whose lives were richer for his presence.
