I'm sponsoring a child!
Edited on Mon Sep-04-06 04:13 PM by mycritters2
I've decided to put my money where my mouth is. I've been saying for a long time, that US Americans need to help the people of Mexico get on their feet, with all the damage NAFTA has done to Mexico. And I've been considering sponsoring a child through my church's global mission program. Now, I'm doing both--I'm sponsoring a child at Bethel Casa, a center that offers shelter, food, support, and transportation to schools for "the poorest of the poor" in Matamoros, Mexico.

It costs so little that I may end up sponsoring two kids. I spoke to a friend who works in global missions and she said the site in Matamoros is in need of sponsors, so I'll be nearly certain to be assigned a kid there, since I've requested that. Don't know a name yet, but I've mailed off my first check, and can't wait to get info about the child.

I also picked Mexico in hopes that I might be able to visit the child and the site some time. That's more likely in Mexico than in Africa or South America.

I'm doing this, helping my brother get up on his feet, and living with 4 rescued pets. And all I can say is that it feels good to help others--now that I have the financial ability.

I'll let you know when I have the child's name--and maybe pics!

1. This is through your church, or a specific program?
Either way, good for you. It's a wonderful thing to give to help those less fortunate, regardless of who/where they are.

2. It's through the UCC/Disciples Global Ministries Office

So, yes, through my church--the United Church of Christ. My congregation sponsors two kids--one a Palestinian boy in Jerusalem, and the other a Tibetan Buddhist refugee boy in India. Congregations or individuals can sponsor kids, so I'll be sponsoring this one on my own. I'm surprisingly excited.

Here's a description of the center where I've requested a sponsored child...
