4. Just jealous cuz no one will give a shit when you die?
Many people liked him. Many are sad that he died so young. People need to express grief.

You could ignore them, if it bothers you so much.

Just a thought.

8. That would make too much sense
It doesn't take long after any major news story for some DUer to start a thread whining about all the previous threads on the subject, professing not to care, and then spending 50 posts explaining their lack of caring in detail.

Quite a lot of effort to spend on something that interests them so little...

And to come onto a liberal message board that is so well known for the sole purpose of ridiculing a recently-deceased person, mocking his death, is about the most illiberal thing I can think of. I hope you are proud of your Republican characteristics.

24. I've never been really into celebrities
be they big or small. So while I'll feel that the death of a person is sad in the sense that any human loss is sad, I'll freely admit I don't understand people becoming significantly unhappy or even distraught over the death of one.

But this "who the f*ck cares" attitude makes me sick. Maybe some people don't give a crap when another human being dies (they're usually called Republicans or Fundies), but many people here do. If you don't give a crap, feel free to use the "hide thread" function on all of the applicable threads.

35. A sting ray got a friend of mine
when he was walking down the street in Des Moines. It come right up to him and did that theing where they spit in the eye with that poisonous stuff and then he just died right there and then on the street. The stingray just laughed, sure enough, and got back in his Hummer and took off. As far as I know, Brad didn't even know the stingray.

as large as a chef's knife.

Which is enough to kill promptly by physical damage.

And stingrays are strong and about 350 kg. (740 ish pounds)

You even used an exclamation point.

We're all anxiously waiting, Einstein, for your scientific explanation as to how a stingray is one of the most poisonous creatures on earth.

56. And if it were one of the worst in the world, which it's not
(or they're not, rather -- there're many stingray species), it'd be venomous, not 'poisonous.' :D

Although the biggest problems with stingray barbs, apart from the impaling, tends to be infection.

63. No, unless maybe I typed
'a.'

Doesn't seem to have even the faintest of idea what Steve was all about, either. That's ultimately their loss -- Steve Irwin's legacy is secure, most vitally within the imaginations and hearts of the children who learned from him. The Crocodile Hunter is to these young minds and spirits what Jacques Cousteau was to the baby boomers and the first Xers...

75. My six year old daughter now talks about sharks nonstop.
She finds them fascinating and calls them "beautiful". Every payday we have to go down to our local bookstore to buy her another book about sharks. She doesn't want to read about anything else. (Unless it's about superheros but that's her special once a month trip to the comic book shop.:) ) She says that when she grows up she wants to work with sharks, since no one else seems to like them.

She got that from watching Steve. Yes, he did a few things that were dangerous but sometimes when you work in animal rescue it's just part of the job. I know people that have been attacked while rescuing dogs and I know of police officers being charged by rutting deer breaking through windows.

He did some dangerous things but overall some of his actions come with the territory. He did quite a bit for conservation of wildlife and native lands. He did just as much, if not more, on educating people about animals that they would otherwise find vile. And his shows stoked an interest in my own child in wildlife preservation.

He died too young but he did fulfill a purpose and he did it well.

55. I'm dumbfounded over this "controversy" here
Why can't we get riled up like this about, oh, matters that really matter to the everyday lives of people trying to scrape by under the Bush junta.

I think Irwin was a good man, a good educator, a good entertainer. If other people don't, so be it. But I don't see where this is cause for such anger and debate.

But then I'm too busy scraping by under the Bush junta, I guess.

60. I know.
I rarely have the opportunity to sharpen my swearing skills, as I am of rather temporate disposition.

Just bieng economical.

If you wonder how one may say such things and describe themselves as temperate, I would assert that I was quite calm at the time of posting.

However, it is said, and I have learned about people what I set out to learn.

Therefore I will ask for the deletion of the post.

62. i just can't figure out the outpouring of compassion for steve irwin
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 06:17 AM by datasuspect
and reconcile that with the nastiness toward other people here who have a different opinion (which is varied and NOT only of the "he deserved it" variety.

before anyone goes apeshit: the death of the man was an unfortunate thing and i offer my condolences to his family

to wit, i've seen:

several "fuck yous"

a couple "no one loves you"

"you are unloved"

"no one will care when YOU die"

"you have accomplished nothing in life"

etc. etc.

i just can't understand that. i would have thought that people MUST realize some people post offensive shit sometimes to get a rise out of people.

sometimes people are just assholes, but i like to try and at least figure out where they are coming from first by engaging them and not automatically making cutting insults as to whether anyone on earth actually loves them.

maybe it is the mourning and bereavement people are feeling that's making them act this way.

but if they are THAT affected by the death (to where people are saying some really shitty thing to people THEY CAN ACTUALLY TALK TO) of a cable teevee celeb, maybe they should use some bereavement time today and call in to work.

67. Ok. I understand. One thing:
Here he is not a cable teevee celeb, but much more well known for his work in the zoos and preserves than any TV shows. (Well, people found out about him from TV at the start, but that is not much in terms of what people think of him)

Perhaps, to others, he is more than a cable teevee celeb also?

64. Nothing like trashing an innocent man!
Is it Steve's fault he's was a celebrity? NO

So don't be pissed that he's getting press because he died. The guy obviously took risks in his career but he knew that this may happen one day. I feel for his wife and family. However, Steve was a champion of raising awareness of animals and educating alot of folks on the animal world. Take that contribution for what you will, but he never did anyone any harm throughout his career, so why trash the guy? It was his choice to do what he did.

It's not his fault that he gets press because of his death. It's silly to trash the man because he got press because of his death. I feel for the family and do care. RIP Croc Hunter

And, sometimes straight girls like to drink a little too much and make out with gay chicks...

93. To everyone: enough already!
Steve Irwin is dead. He was a great man. Or maybe he was a tosser. He was killed by a stingray. Stingrays are not a menace. Or maybe they are. I just don't give a shit any more.

96. Caring but not to the point of obsession.
It happens there is a child in the household who knew about Irwin's sudden death before I knew, so I am just being patient parent. Otherwise, there have been other deaths within my circle of friends recently so it's day by day. So I am not any more obsessed about the Irwin accident than anything else.

100. I don't hate the guy; he's middle of the road for me.
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 11:29 AM by HypnoToad
I can think of people more deserving.

But he wasn't entirely a bad influence either... unless kids started baiting rattlesnakes and other critters just like their role model idol icon...

I'm sorry he died young.

I'm sorry he left a family.

But he had a family.

He died doing what he loved.

He died quickly.

In perspective:

His family will get his wealth and they will live in comfort. How many people die, whose families end up nothing because of whatever financial reasons?

Thank God he didn't die slowly.

And, hell yeah, he had a fun and warm personality. Who could hate him, regardless of anything some of us disagree with him on?

104. correct, the tapes have not been posted as yet, but word is that...
the camera was rolling when the event occurred; he & his cameraman were very near the animal indeed if not perhaps too near surely insofar as the ray was concerned, and Irwin had (as it is reported preliminary of course) swam over the top of the ray causing a defensive action on the part of the ray...sad

while the good works of Stever Irwin are being told in conjunction; many experts in the field of marine biology are stepping forward with mention as well as to the sting ray's behavioral patterns being defensive by nature...again sad

105. For crying out loud...

Sting rays just aren't that dangerous. This was a freak accident.

The only reason Irwin's dead is because the stinger happened to hit his heart. If it had hit anywhere else a couple of inches over Irwin would be just fine.

some film on the subject regarding rays 'in the wild', 30mins from any medical assist that may have been helpful :eyes: my sense is that were you to put your mai-tai down and kick any one of those rays in your pic there, you too would find an alternate moment in your future
