5. Between 1956 and 1962 Pat Boone had 18 Top Ten records
with 6 #1 records.

If The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame is designed to "honor" those who made a SIGNIFICANT contribution to rock music (in terms of record sales, airplay, etc.) - and if you were around during the above mentioned time period then you know Boone was a HUGE star - then he has to be in.

Period.

Whether you like him or not (and I don't).

Avalon, Boone, Rydell, Sedaka - yes, it was pasteurized "white" music to the nth degree, but it sold millions of records.

Sorry.

14. Of course you don't
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 11:33 AM by DancingBear
But, then again, some only want to believe what they want to believe, and they want to believe that their "taste" trumps everyone else's.

You see, significant DOES equate to record sales, and it is VERY much a part of an artist's career.

Do tell, though, what your qualifications are/should be for inclusion into said Hall Of Fame.

Is is Number One records? Boone had 6. Top 20 - he had 18. Airplay? Sales? Was the artist "big" during a particular time frame? Boone gets a yes here.

Or is it something else? Something that maybe you think is valid, and I don't. Something subjective, perhaps, like maybe a band or artist that affected you personally, but never really "moved" the pile in any significant way. That's why they have statistics in baseball, and that's why they have "numbers" in music, because if subjectivity ruled then the proverbial all hell would break loose.

I don't know if you were around during his heyday, but I doubt it. The hardest thing to do when it comes to music, arts, etc. is to view a career through the prism of objectivity. If this is done, and we reject the homophobic, religious zealot that Boone has become (actually, he has probably been that forever, but so have many of his peers) then we must look at the body of work, and how it played amongst his peers. This is why your Coulter analogy is spurious at best.

During the period from '56 to '62, Boone was a big a recording star (in what passed for rock music then) as anyone. That is just a fact. If the job of the gatekeepers of the Hall Of Fame is to determine who was a (key word) formative player, then Boone has to get in.

Do I like it? Not really, but when jokes like Skynrd are let in then I guess the whole thing really doesn't matter anyway, yes?

19. He wasn't formative....
He was just pop music watered down even further than it already was at that time...

I feel that someone should have contributed significantly to "rock-n-roll" in order to be considered for enshrinement...

There are far too many in the Hall that don't belong...

It is like the pro football hall of fame...

So many enter every year...

Baseball, the lines are drawn clearly higher than in any other Hall of Fame...

I think there should only be two or three inductees per year in the Rock Hall...

So, does this mean Blue Cheer gets in instead? :)

45. Except that record sales and airplay...
do NOT make for a 'significant' contribution. Influence on other musicians DOES, however--which is why the Velvet Underground, for instance, who never got much airplay and never had a hit record, are quite deservedly in the Hall of Fame, and also why Pat Boone definitely shouldn't be.

Or, to put it another way: Dean Koontz' novels have sold millions of copies. But no-one in his right mind would try to argue that Koontz has had a significant influence on Western literature. Garbage that sells well is still garbage.

46. P.S.
Not really - the VU are in because of Lou Reed. No more, no less. His influence on others, mostly through his songs, are what did it. As I'm sure you know, the VU were the ultimate cult band, and if Reed had faded from sight after they broke up they would have been looking through the windows instead of being inducted. In this case, influence did indeed play a role.

However, If your theory is to hold across the board, then bands who directly influenced others (like The Flying Burrito Brothers) would be in, and of course they are not. But THESE folks are:

Everly Brothers
Ricky Nelson
Gene Pitney

Can you tell me exactly WHO these musicians influenced to make the HOF? Or perhaps maybe, just maybe, it was due to the fact that they sold millions of records and were at the top of the charts during their heyday?

Now, you may not know Gene Pitney from Adam, but if you had a transistor radio glued to your ear in 1962 then you damn well knew. Trust me, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" is no "Blue Suede Shoes."

You are making the same mistakes as others - using perceived "influence" as the barometer of selection, and neglecting the very real component of how big a star someone was. You see, if they had a writer's hall of fame, and it used the same set of criteria that sports halls of fame or the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame uses, then Dean Koontz would be in it. So would Tom Clancy. And Hemingway.

Honestly, it isn't about do you like such and such, and it isn't about who amongst "the great unwashed" should be allowed to enter. It's just really simple - during their time period, did a particular artist matter?

Boone did - DURING THAT TIME. He met the criteria, so you have to put him in.

ZZ Top did during their time, so they are in.

Oh, and if influence was truly the leading indicator then Wynonie Harris would be in.

But you probably knew that.

Didn't you? :)

15. Ah, I was waiting for the KISS one....
In the early/mid 70's, KISS were an absolute joke. They were that era's Grand Funk Railroad. Cut-out bins (places where records went to die) were filled with .99 Kiss albums. By the thousands. "Cultured" rock fans laughed at them. Their albums made wonderful table shims.

But you see, you define KISS as to how YOU remember them, and you define Boone as how YOU heard him.

You need to be able to place things in context - it makes the process that much easier, and it makes a whole lot more sense.

17. By that take, Britney Spears should be in the Hall of Fame...
Add Frankie Avalon and Annette Funecello...

The sorry state of Rock in the late 50's and early 60's doesn't necessarily give someone a free pass into the hall...

Remember that time was after Freed was prosecuted and Elvis was in the Army so pop music was really on life support...

It wasn't until surf music, Blue-eyed Philadelphia soul, Motown and the Beatles came to town that pop music recovered...

22. I'll agree with a good bit of that
Most folks will agree that the late 50's/early 60's was a "down" period musically.

However, be that as it may it was the transition from pure rock and roll (and don't EVEN get me going about how no one actually knows what "rock and roll" is) to the above mentioned styles. Rock and roll (Little Richard, Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins, etc.) was dying, and in the vacuum came "safe" music, or as some say the second coming of the crooners. Along with it, however, came the beginnings of Philly soul (The Dovells with "Bristol Stomp", etc.), R&B on Atlantic (The Drifters, etc.) and (still) hit acts like The Coasters. The belief that all this period consisted of was Boone, Avalon, etc. is not correct.

That is why I argue that taken in THAT context, and stacked up against those artists, Boone's record of 6 #1 hits and 18 Top Ten just can't be ignored.

Just curious - how do you feel abut Ricky Nelson and the HOF? During the same time period as Boone, he had 9 Top Ten records, and 2 At Number One.

P.S. Spears may get in someday. They're gettin' pretty lax up there in Cleveland.... :)

Trivia time: Who sang lead on "The Bristol Stomp"? (ah, that's an easy one...)

a heck of a lot more albums than Pat Boone. Whether you were a fan or not, you have heard of them. Pat Boone in mine and I'm sure in the so-called "Cultured" rock fans opinion is a bigger joke than the Muppets singing rock and roll songs.

But hey, if you like Pat Boone it's cool. I ain't gonna jump in your shit and act like a baby just because you do and I don't.

31. What influence???
They were a third-rate band who made it big - the second time around.

And please, ix nay the "if you like Boone" comments. My arguments have NOTHING to do with liking or dis-liking him (true be told - I can't stand his records, save for being able to tolerate "Speedy Gonzales").

Oh, and to rock historians and those who have lived through most of it Boone is viewed as a successful artist. If you could get over your pre-conceived notions of what rock music is/was in the late 50's (I was there) you would know better than to make the statements you made.

As I said up thread, it is a foolish thing to define the past in terms of how you view the present.

In case you missed it, Jagger is in his 60's and is a joke now - but put the needle down on "Down The Road Apiece" from "The Rolling Stones Now" and the present images melt away.

As it should be.

apartment and her new boyfriend had his Kiss albums over there. She thought she had them hid. Too bad for her that they weren't hidden good enough?

Karyl, if you're here right now do you remember that?

Kiss is the band who's followers were like here boyfriend. He stole her luggage when he moved out on her.

And she never lived the Kiss thing down. It's decades later and one of the things I remember about Gaylinn is the night we found the Kiss albums in her apartment.

When they shipped out back to Biloxi she said she
