Wow, my wife and I are soon to be labeled 'heretics' by the So. Bapt. Conv
My wife mentioned to her mother that we had considered joining a church where we live. It is Disciples of Christ, a much more liberal denomination. Her mother told her, that if she joined that church, she would be labeled a heretic by the neocon SBC church of her upbringing.

Nevermind the audacity of a mother telling her daughter this...

I would not want to be a member of a church that says "We're right... unequivocally. Everyone else is a heretic." They can take that hypocritical arrogance and stick it elsewhere.

The thing that churches hate to hear... is that their particular denomination was founded on someones OPINION of the interpretation of the Bible. Nothing more, nothing less.

Sorry... I'm a little fed up with this arrogant self-righteous nonsense that comes from her parents.

1. Any parent that puts love of church over love of their own child
is a sad specimen. Any church that demands such a thing is a cult.
Fwiw,we're currently being 'shunned' by my SB inlaws. :hi:

5. Pretty well that's what 's happening here.
They said they'd rather us be OUT of church, than in the 'wrong' church. The nerve of some people.

I have been excommunicated from my family over my lack of religion. But don't cry for me. I'm a big boy and I can take it.

You always know the right thing to say.

I'm currently reading "Misquoting Jesus" by Bart Ehrman. Have you read it? Quite an intriguing read.

Instead of

it could be

12. Same here. The problem is...
...that it's hard to be called a heretic PERSONALLY
unless you actually belong to the church that is
doing the condemning. And frankly, I ain't joinin'
no church just for that.

6. I think you'll find the Disciples of Christ very rewarding.
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 09:43 PM by Ptah
One of the congregations here in Tucson is quite active:

The Humane Borders:
http://www.humaneborders.org/about/about_quickfacts.html
# Founded: June 11, 2000, as an Arizona Corporation with 501(c)(4) IRS status.
# Headquarters: First Christian Church, Tucson, Ariz.

Some famous Disciples:

# Lyndon Baines Johnson, 36th President of the United States (whose family, however, had been staunchly Baptist and whose wife Lady Bird Johnson is a devoted Anglican)

# Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the United States (baptized into the Disciples as a youth, but a member of Bel Air Presbyterian Church in his later years)

9. Disciples of Christ is very strong here in North Arkansas
and Southern Missouri. The DoC congregation here was the first church when this area was settled in the 1820s.

We like it a lot...

22. My FIL attends a Disciples of Christ church and enjoys it a lot. The
funny thing is that he is as right-wing as they come! I think he gets on with the church's more liberal views on science because he's a retired petroleum engineer and can't exactly go for creationism.

You don't need dogma and fairy tales. You know how to behave in society. Your time could be so much better spent.

That's just my 2 cents. Not that you asked...

18. A Heretic?
I didn't know Baptists had that authority. Hmmm ... learn something new every day.

A somewhat related story relayed to me by my mother about a cousin who sits on the edge of such things. She was raised a Baptist, but as a child started questioning certain things about the SBC where she went. According to them, a baptism didn't mean anything unless it was performed *in* a church building and resulted in the individual becoming a member of that church. Otherwise, you'd still go to Hell.

"Daddy," she said at the time, "does that mean since Jesus wasn't baptized in a church that he went to Hell?"

Mom said he started having serious ulcer problems about that same time.

19. Yeah...
It's one thing to take things from the Bible literally, and extrapolate them all over society, like the SBC does...

It's another thing just to make shit up, and foist it upon everyone as the word of God.

My wife doesn't want to upset her parents, but that's the difference between her and me.

I'm a grown man, and my spiritual existence is mine alone to live. All others, family included, can MYOB.

27. For many people, their "faith" is more important than their children.
They get it from worshiping a god that ordered one follower to sacrifice his son, who let a prophet get bears to maul scores of children because the kids made fun of him, and who "so loved the world" that he let his own son get tortured to death.

This is the love of god. In her own way, your mother in law is showing her love for her daughter.

:grr:

I am sorry your wife and you have that kind of crap in your lives.

And it's so easy to do. I started young, as me and my other friends in my Methodist youth group used to sit around trying to think up ways to make them mad. It all started when the SBs tried to get MTV banned from our local cable when it first came out...ahhh, the memories.

41. The Disciples are wonderful!
My own denomination keeps coming close to merging with 'em, but it isn't official yet (I keep hoping!). I did interim ministry for the Disciples for 4 years, and found it a great experience. My grandparents were committed Disciples.

Disciples are absolutely non-creedal, so there were Conservatives sitting in worship with liberals, and everybody in between--as God intends, imo!

Really--great people!
