4. You know the story of the Tar Baby?

Hope that's not too unPC. I was
raised on Uncle Remus.
It's impossible to get involved at all,
with even the purest funniest intentions,
without getting tar all over your sparkling dickey.
And for what?
It's this uuuurrrrrrrge
to say something in the midst
of the brouhaha, thinking it will
lighten or calm the ecology of the place,
or educate or enlighten or just plain straighten out,
but always hidden in every message is some little hook
meant to tear a little flesh too
that just adds to the ball of bile and keeps
it a rolling. And then you stop and think,
what for? What mind is being changed in there?
Maybe one post in a hundred is really more
light than heat. Are people even really trying
to change minds and influence voters, or is
it nothing but trying to wound the other guy
like you've been wounded and yet nobody acts like
nothing hurts and has no effect whatsoever!
All that vitriolic firepower wasted both ways
on the utterly invulnerable!

I don't think those folks want help - they just want to seek and destroy. Let them have their battles, the rest of us will stay calm and wait it out, picking up the pieces when it's over.
