3. I would not choose a hysterectomy, and here's why:

The impact on a woman's body is far more serious than the impact to a man from a vasectomy. The surgery itself is major and removes internal organs. The lack of hormones that these organs generate will cause a woman to go into menopause prematurely. Recovery time from the surgery is at least six weeks if not longer. Scarring is permanent and can be extensive. However, a vasectomy involves a small incision, can be done in a doctor's office, and is considered minor surgery. The entire procedure takes a lot less time and impact to a man's body, and recovery time is much less.

My mother underwent a hysterectomy for medical reasons, and she does not recommend it to ANYONE unless it's completely necessary. A tubal ligation is preferable, but it still involves surgery. My brother-in-law has a vasectomy, and he said he was only uncomfortable for a weekend. Just 'cause a guy doesn't want to think of himself as "shooting blanks" is no reason for a woman to have to remove internal organs just to prevent pregnancy.

My opinion. :) And that's why I take oral contraceptives.

Certainly a tubal ligation is far more risk and trouble than a vasectomy, but it is far LESS trouble and risk than a hysterectomy.

My tubal ligation recovery was merely a week.

and even a partial ovary is sufficient to maintain estrogen levels. With the so called bikini cut (horizontal incision just above the pubic bone), the scarring is barely noticeable.

That said, you're absolutely right that a hysterectomy is the least preferable birth control method - way too extreme. The only positive thing about it is that it is foolproof.

A tubal ligation would be more comparable to a vascectomy. A hysterectomy removes the woman's uterus and will throw her into menopause regardless of her age. It's incredibly invasive surgery and requires a long and painful healing process.

If I'd had a c-section with my last baby, I might've just had them tie my tubes while they were in, but I didn't; so my husband got snipped. It's been wonderful never having to think about birth control, and I certainly don't miss being on synthetic hormones! My husband was fine with the idea of a vasectomy; and I got to go with and watch the procedure.

see them better. They weren't quite as I'd pictured them being. Unfortunately for my husband, the local anesthetic didn't take well, so he was red and shaking for most of the procedure, but he survived.

When I had my last I *did* have a c-section, and I did tell them to snip, burn, remove, dynamite...whatever needed to be done. I then apparently (so said my SO at the time who was in with me) told the doctor, "You messed up my mom's hysterectomy. If you fuck this up, I swear to god I will firebomb your house".

and relatively painless. I got mine twenty odd years ago and never thought about or worried about it again. It is much simpler than going through the ordeal of a hysterectomy. My wife had her hysterectomy for medical reasons and it was awful.

Once you decide you don't want to reproduce a vasectomy is the way to go. I had mine done a few months ago. The anesthesia injections were incredibly painful but they only lasted a few seconds, seemed like a fair trade for a lifetime of worry-free pleasure. I was in and out of the doctor's office in less than an hour.

Besides, the official recovery program is every man's dream: spending a weekend on the couch with a TV remote.
