List movies that must be seen on a big screen to be fully appreciated.
Edited on Thu Sep-07-06 12:05 AM by bob_weaver
"Lawrence of Arabia" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" are the most obvious answers, but what other films can only be truly appreciated when watched on a large screen in a theater?

5. I second 2001
Edited on Thu Sep-07-06 12:02 AM by Hardhead
I saw it on a fantastic screen in Denver many years ago (can't remember the name of the theater, but it was the best in town). Being 9 or 10 at the time, I was immensely bored through most of it, but the spectacle was very impressive in places.

I would add Apocalypse Now, which was absolutely riveting the first time I saw it.

Alien was also a theater-only experience, especially during the first week of its release, when many moviegoers didn't suspect they'd see a creature burst through a man's chest during dinner.

7. I was lucky to get to see "2001" at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood,
about 1972 or so. They did the whole thing, the overture with the curtains closed, the intermission, etc.

I saw both Apocalypse Now and Alien at the same theater (by chance) in Phoenix, a large-screen one that is now gone I think. I think I was slightly disappointed in A.N. on the first viewing, or confused by the ending. Alien was a shocker.

23. I also saw 2001 in Cinerama
That system rocked. If only they still had some cmovie theaters around now with that option.

47. Oh, so that was YOU. Give me your parents' name and phone number.
Actually the only movie I ever saw there was "2001." We drove all the way from Orange to Hollywood to see it. I would have loved to see other movies there, but we lived too far away. I'm just glad to know that they never tore it down.

51. Damn right!
I switched the TV to Star Wars III the other night - not because I cared to watch it, but so that I could turn the stereo way up just to hear the overture. I cried. Great memories.

13. big-screen must sees, for me means lots of special effects and huge casts
So, the LotR movies are great examples. Especially Return of the King, for its huge battle scenes.

Some of the Star Wars picks as well.

I'm lucky because my husband decided to turn my plain old TV room into a home theater.
So we have a huge screen on one wall and surround sound so when we watch any movie it sounds like your right there.
And we don't even watch sports! He did it all for his movies.
I forgot one- March of the Penguins cause you have to feel cold to watch that

:silly:

39. I'll buy that, I didn't watch it until it came out on DVD and I could tell
that it was a "big-screen" movie with the sweeping mountain panoramas. That made me sorry that I didn't go to see it while it was in theaters.

36. Gladiator, The Messenger
Gladiator just for the first battle scene as well as the fights in the Colosseum with the roar of the spectators.

The Messenger for it's battle scenes as well, like when they were storming that one small keep outside of Leons?
