Question about non-Christian religions.

I need to get a language issue addressed for something I'm writing.

Pretend that someone asks you to do something that violates your religious beliefs. I, as a Christian, might say, "That's against the principles of my Christianity, so I can't do it."

I'm fairly certain the language construct for a Jew would be: "That's against the principles of my Judaism, so I can't do it."

What about other religions? I am especially interested in what a Muslim or Wiccan or Pagan might say in that situation.

There's not really any pre-scripted Buddhist response when asked something we cannot do. At least, they never really taught me any at the secret Buddha meetings.

For that matter, we have no commandments, per se, that forbid us from things. It's more a study in action and consequence; an honest look at what happens if you do something bad. There are the ten non-virtues describing action, speech and thought that should be completely avoided (3 physical: killing, stealing, sexual misconduct; 4 verbal: lying, divisive talk, harsh speech, senseless chatter; 3 mental: covetousness, harmful intent and wrong views). But, rather than an inviolable edict passed down from a higher power, it is more the understanding that when we do something wrong, we cause suffering in ourselves, and in those around us. It is this desire to end suffering that lies at the heart of Buddhism, and thus these are things that we do not do.

By the way, I once heard a Jehova's Witness say "The tenets of my religion forbid me from doing this." It was on Law & Order, and he was refusing to take a blood test. (It turned out he was the rapist in question, and the blood test would have proven his guilt, so that was the real reason he refused.)

7. I know a Buddhist would say

that this runs against the teachings of the Buddha...HOWEVER.

There is a koan from Buddhism that states:

"If you see the Buddha walking down the road, kill him."

This is meant to mean that rather than following law, follow your meditations and your heart....
