Thrilling job opportunity, or complete weasel deal?
So I'm trolling craigslist the other day, and I see an opening for executive director of a nonprofit that's involved in one of the few things that could get me off the island. (Hint: see avatar to left.) So I email for the complete job description, as instructed...

...and back it comes this morning. Here's the catch: the pay ("base salary") is embarrassingly low even for the city in which it is located (where all wages have always been embarrassingly low :( ); they expect me to make up the difference with a ten-percent cut of any funds we (I) raise over their base budget! :wtf:

The kicker: They do "behavior profiling"! Not the airport kind, but the HR version of eHarmony, where they use some damn standardized test, probably owned by Neil Bush, to "determine" whether I'm "compatible" with their staff, board members, what have you. Bear in mind that a large part of my attraction to the city in question comes from its historically welcoming attitude to those, like myself, who live outside the psychiatric mainstream.

What to do? Wait to see what happens with thatother director's opening I just went for?? :-)

1. Oh, come on. Maybe if I sweetened the pot a little...
obviously this job (?) is on the mainland, and the name "KamaAina" refers specifically to Hawai'i. So if you give me some advice on this, you get to help me pick a new one. 'K?

3. i'm missing something
i must know feck-all about getting a job because i don't see the point of behavior profiling someone for a job which is largely commission based

i thought most jobs of that nature were sink or swim, only you know if you are good enough at public relations/sales to be able to generate

good fund raisers are such a prized breed that it would seem stupid to eliminate one w.a track record on the basis of some test

honestly, the area is not as you remember, expenses have gone sky high since the storm, even the cost of food is enough to make me want to break down and weep in the grocery store

i guess i'm saying if you think you can aggressively raise funds, then i wouldn't worry over-much about the test, if they over-rely on something like that rather than a proven track record of sales/rfund raising, the heck w. them -- they might be too nutty to work w.

i'd also wait and see what the other company offers of course

5. Hey! How did you know which area?!

:-)

I don't see the point either. And the agency in question is (or would be if they weren't nuts) pretty well-positioned to be part of the arduous rebuilding process.

And that's just it: Me? Aggressively raise funds? Remember what we have in common... now try and imagine me "aggressively raising funds", let alone scoring "highly" on a standardized behavior test!

honestly, the area is not as you remember, expenses have gone sky high since the storm, even the cost of food is enough to make me want to break down and weep in the grocery store

On your side, too? Crikey! Were there a lot of regional distribution centers in N.O. East or something? I read that the price of hot dogs has gone up by 20 percent along the Coast. Am I missing something? Is this a slow-burn version of the time-honored :sarcasm: post-storm price gouge? Edit: And on top of that, white-collar wages are still bottom of the barrel :( Where will it end?

I shall send you the various materials via PM (the other one closes Sat.); maybe you know someone who is already there who is a better fit, and drives :P

6. Actually the job in question isn't in Hawai'i
and the base salary is lower than I'm making out here. (Hint: Your football team has a disconcerting habit of humiliating their football team twice a year.)

I actually was considering Atlanta at one point (when I was down there, naturally), and don't you know, I'm coming to the ATL for a conference in mid-Oct. Perhaps I shall pick up a "Urinal-Constipation" :P and see what it's got...

7. my wife worked for a non-profit with the same "commission" deal
the executive director got a cut of whatever grant money they were awarded above the operating budget. it was an incentive to focus on grant writing so that the program could expand.

i have no idea if that will help you or not.
