Radio Lady Reviews: "Hollywoodland"
Edited on Thu Sep-07-06 10:24 PM by Radio_Lady

“Hollywoodland,” the new movie starring Adrien Brody, Ben Affleck, and Diane Lane, is terrific. Working from an excellent script by Paul Bernbaum, director Allen Coulter, in his feature directorial debut, has crafted a suspenseful mystery with sharply drawn characters that you will long remember. Coulter is an award nominee for his prior work on “The Sopranos” and “Sex in the City”. If “Hollywoodland” is any indication of what he can do with film…WOW…let us have more of it, please!

This is such a well-done movie on so many fronts that it’s hard to know where to begin. Maybe the best place is with a little background on the generally-believed-to-be-true story. The central figure is actor George Reeves who achieved some level of celebrity in the early 1950s playing Superman on television. He became so typecast in the role that he was denied satisfaction of his goal of becoming a more serious actor. Despondent, he finally committed suicide in June 1959, or was it really homicide? Therein lies the tale to be told in “Hollywoodland.”

The film’s re-creation of Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s is remarkable (Just as an aside, I was studying film and theater arts at U.C.L.A. in 1959 and 1960, and I recall the original incident quite well.) The scenic design and attention to detail on this film is matched by the superlative performances of its stars, Brody, Affleck, and Lane, who are equally as well supported by the likes of Bob Hoskins, Joe Spano, Robin Tunney and Molly Parker. Credit Allen Coulter for obtaining so much from these actors.

Adrien Brody, in a fictional role as the beat-out, on-the-edge, divorced father and private eye Louis Simo, is riveting. Ben Affleck delivers to the hilt as George Reeves -- a role that easily could garner an Oscar nomination --in my opinion, Affleck has never been this good. Also, Brody and Affleck could be in competition for this recognition. Diane Lane, playing George’s lover, Toni Mannix, just continues to amaze as she demonstrates the depth and breadth of her abilities. In a more limited but solid outing, Bob Hoskins plays Toni’s husband, Eddie Mannix, the movie magnate.

"Hollywoodland" has a solid impact which is due in part to the way the film presents two interwoven stories. One is the Simo detective story as he struggles to uncover the truth of what happened to Reeves. The other is the Reeves story of what his life was all about leading up to his death. The direction and film editing achieves at an exceptional level as the two stories are skillfully combined and unfolded. It all has exactly the right touch and the transitions are so appropriate as to feel natural and never jarring. Add in some flashbacks, so you can keep up with the characters in various time sequences.

So, was it murder or was it suicide? Don’t worry about it. It is not as important as the vehicle Coulter puts us in to get us there. And what a ride it is. This is “A” quality movie-making all the way and that’s what I rate it on Ellen's Entertainment Report Card.

'Hollywoodland'

Directed by Allen Coulter; screenplay by Paul Bernbaum; cinematography by Jonathan Freeman; edited by Michael Berenbaum; production design by Leslie McDonald; music by Marcelo Zarvos; produced by Glenn Williamson.
A Focus Features release; opens Friday 09/08/06.
Running time: 2:06
MPAA rating: R (for language, some violence and sexual content).

2. I had fun picking out the various cars that were owned by people
Edited on Thu Sep-07-06 10:41 PM by Radio_Lady
in my family (particularly the beautiful 1957 Bel Air Chevrolet), boyfriends (1956 Oldsmobile 88, 1955-56 Chevrolet), and a couple of others I can't exactly name.

But the cars were the least of it. "Hollywoodland" was just an amazing film from beginning to end.

Hope you like it -- and aren't bored or critical of the pacing as some reviewers seem to be.

Oh, I wish I had that car now!

First boyfriend, now age 70, owned this car:

14. Hollywoodland & The Black Dahlia are at the top of our list !
I just love 1940-1960's Los Angeles. (True Confessions, 1981) Also, I'm a Big James Ellroy fan.

26. I also love that Los Angeles period...
when Ellroy's first "Brown's Requiem" came out, it was evident that he was a kindred spirit (although that novel had a late 70s/early 80s setting), due to his references to events and people of that period. I remember hoping that he would not be a one time author :)

Great actress, and yummier at 40+ than she was at 20.

As Toni Mannix, she plays the adulterous vamp of a wife, married to a movie studio mogul -- her hair (or wig) is in platted waves and her voice is breathy and tantalizing.

I couldn't imagine anyone else doing a better job!

This is from "History of Violence" with Viggo Mortensen..hotcha!

Edited on Fri Sep-08-06 12:56 PM by Radio_Lady
I made an error -- Maria Bello, not Diane Lane, played with Viggo Mortensen in "A History of Violence."

However, Diane Lane is just the best at what she does. This lists the 49 performances she currently has completed, with two upcoming roles in 2006 and 2007.

22. She deserved the Oscar for "Unfaithful"
But so did about every other nominated actress that year -- it was a great year for women's roles.

That movie is great, imo.... because, no one is the bad guy, or the good guy... they are just people who all get caught up in some type of emotion. Great flick.

30. Just saw it and I agree
for the most part. Your good review got me to go see it. I'll say this: it's the best work of Ben Affleck's career. He's excellent and brings some depth to the character of George, a man struggling to be more than he is. He brings a dash of humor and charm to the role that makes him intriguing. There's some real pathos in a man who plays a superhero but feels limited in that role. Also excellent is Adrien Brody as the bumbling private eye, especially in the way his motivations are unclear -- is it the truth or the money he wants? My only complaints have to do with directorial pacing, which I felt lagged at the beginning and in other parts. Overall, fine film, and I'll admit I'm a sucker for self-referential takes on the Hollywood milieu (a la "Mulholland Drive" and "Barton Fink," two of my favorite movies).

Nice review and thanks for the heads up!

33. UPDATE: Weak Weekend for Movies Sept. 9 -- 10
Link to: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=2153&p=.htm

'Covenant' Hovers Over Weak Weekend
by Brandon Gray
September 11, 2006

The weekend after Labor Day is traditionally one of, if not the weakest of the year. A lull occurs as the industry and the public transition into the fall season, and the new movies frequently have little appeal. With the release of The Covenant, Hollywoodland and The Protector, this weekend was no exception, but the overall result was off 18 percent from the same frame last year, making this the weakest weekend in years.

Not since Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star opened to $6.7 million on the comparable weekend three years ago has there been a lower-grossing weekend as a whole. What's more, to find a weekend where fewer actual tickets were sold, one has to go back five years, when the box office was diminished in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 Islamic terrorist attack on America.

The first sub-$10 million No. 1 movie in two years, Sony's The Covenant invoked $8.9 million at 2,681 locations, selling fewer tickets than The Craft did ten years ago. The Covenant, a supernatural teen movie, appeared like a male version of The Craft, which instead had four girls dabbling in witchcraft.

Distributor Sony previously found horror success on this same frame in 2004, with Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and last year, with the surprise hit The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Those pictures were aberrations for the time of year—the former an action sequel with a solid fan base and the latter a creepy horror dealing with a consistently popular topic, exorcism—while modest-at-best movies like The Covenant are the norm.

Also debuting and rousing minor intrigue, Hollywoodland uncovered $5.9 million at 1,548 theaters. Movies about Hollywood tend not to attract a mass audience, and, in its marketing, this period murder mystery did not offer any characters to latch onto for its tour through the seedy side. The Protector, a martial arts import featuring Tony Jaa, kicked up less business than the average dubbed Jackie Chan import, grossing $5 million at 1,541 venues.

Last weekend's most impressive gainer, The Illusionist, had the strongest hold of wide releases, down 27 percent to $4.5 million. However, it had a significant expansion, increasing its theater count by 40 percent or 391 theaters to a total of 1,362. Yari Film Group's period mystery has amassed $18 million in 24 days.

The rest of the holdovers fared worse, dropping around 50 percent on average.
