I wrote what I thought was a really clever piece of code, and I was about to write up the algorithm to show the rest of the department. I have just been made aware that somebody else wrote another algorithm to solve the same problem, which it accomplishes in half as much code.

John Von Neumann, the famous mathematician was attending a university cocktail party. A woman, who wasn't a mathematician, asked him a trick math question, just to see if he knew the answer.

The question is this: A bicycle leaves Point A traveling ten miles per hour. Twenty miles away, another bike leaves Point B going the opposite direction at ten miles per hour, on a head on collision course with the other bike. Meanwhile, there's a bug on the first bike that flies at twenty five miles an hour. As soon as the first bike leaves, it flies to the other bike, then back to the first bike, and so on until it gets squished when the bikes collide. How far in total does the bug fly?

Well, there's two ways to answer this question. One is a ridiculously hard method, rich requires adding the infinite sums... figuring out how far the fly has to travel before it reaches the second bike, adding that to the return trip which will be less, then the next trip, and so on into infinity.

The second method is the trick. The bikes are twenty miles apart, going ten miles an hour. The bikes will collide in one hour. The bug flies at 25 miles an hour. So it will fly exactly 25 miles.

So this woman at the cocktail party asks Von Neumann this question.

And he thinks about it for a few seconds and say, "25 miles."

And the woman said, "oh, you know the trick!"

And Von Neumann says, "what trick? I just added up the infinite sums."
