OMG! I Bought a Used Bookstore!
Well, not the store itself, but the contents.

20,000+ books, plus over 100 matching bookshelves. It's about 5 hours away. Now i gotta figure out how to get it all back here and what to do with them when I do.

OMG! I actually did it...

Now I need to find a location to lease.

I plan on buying another large lot, maybe 10 or 15,000 more.

and then getting new books added later.

But HOLY SHIT! I actually took my first step toward owning my own business...

:scared:

I was in a big-ass used book barn in PA last weekend, and I thought about how far into heaven you'd be. :D

I see...a rental truck and a storage unit in your immediate future.

If/When you open the place, see if you can get signed copies of books. People love that.

24. Some Suggestions
1. Get creative with the store hours. Keep them simple so that people can remember them, but otherwise don't put any restrictions on what you're willing to consider.

For example:

A. Store hours: Wednesday to Sunday, 4 PM to Midnight. People are in a bad mood on Monday, so why not wait until Wednesday for them to cheer up?

B. Store hours: Tuesday to Thursday 6 AM to 2 PM; and Friday to Sunday 4 PM to Midnight. This way any particular person will likely be able to fit a visit to the store into his or her schedule.

C. Store hours: Tuesday to Sunday 6 AM to Noon and 6 PM to Midnight (In other words, open each day early, close for 6 hours, and then open again for another 6 hours).

2. Discount on bulk purchases

Encourage people to buy, for their friends, copies of a book that they particularly like. For example, offer 4 copies of any one book for the price of 3. The goal is to increase sales and lower your per-book cost of sales.

3. Automatic buy-back for books in good condition after the return period has ended.

In other words, if people can return a book within two weeks with the receipt from your store, then tell them how much you will pay them for a book (with the receipt from your store) for perhaps as much as a year after the two-week period has ended. For example, start with 75 percent of what they paid and subtract five percent for every month since they bought it.

Possible advantage #1: You will be able to offer used copies of a given book for sale at a discount. This will help you get an idea of how much of a mark-up people are willing to pay for superficial qualities of newness.

Possible advantage #2: It will give poor customers the option of lower prices with no loss of information for them.

Possible advantage #3: That policy might make some people more willing to buy books from you. Yes, they might not like the idea of a book going down in value soon after it is "driven off the lot", but they will at least know where and how to re-sell it. Maybe they can think of it as a long-term loan for a price, a deal not offered by public libraries.

4. Stock up on books available in public libraries only in the reference section. Also stock up on books that are still in print, but not readily available in public libraries. For example, there are particular books for which all copies are lost or missing or in transit or on hold.

No, I will not get rich, i'll be lucky to stay in business...

Could be worse.

Edited on Fri Sep-08-06 10:03 PM by LuckyTheDog
Now, form an S Corp. You could manage at first with an LLC, but incorporating has advantages. Do NOT try to get by with a DBA.

Also: don't try to do all the "business" crap yourself. Get a bookkeeper. And by all means join a small business networking/support group. Your profile says you are male. But, if there is a National Association of Women Business Owners chapter in your area, join it (they'll let you in if they are anything like the NAWBO chapter where I am). NAWBO is great. http://www.nawbo.org/.

You also will want to look into SCORE: http://www.score.org/. They can hook you up with a volunteer mentor.

Good luck.

I did a 4 week course with SCORE and have a retail business mentor.
Did loan seminars with the SBA.
Found a bookstore consulting firm and worked with them.
Been researching the bookselling industry.
Been reading daily email industry newsletters for about 6 months.

36. Congratulations!
I will never forget when my father bought 6 or 7 boxes of old books from a flea market.
They way they smelled and looked. I held everyone of them and wondered about the people that owned them......
Have a blast!!!! I love used books. They can tell more stories then the words written in between the pages.....

96. How much did that cost?
That's probably more inventory than I had, unless you count the 5,000 harlequins I had. I never had much luck with harlequins. I sold the old ones at 10 for $1 and hardly ever sold any. I did have one person who got them through the mail, read them fast and then sold them to me for 25 cents each. They get them in the mail a couple months before wholesalers do so I would have October or November harlequins for sale used by this date. Still I only got 75 cents for them or 5 for $3.

I am thinking this will be a tough living. It was for me although I kinda miss it, and the books too. Crimony. I have been out of business now longer than I was in it and I am still nostalgic and wondering if I could have/ should have done some things different. Obviously, if I had known that my competition would close a year after I did, I would have stayed with it.

but I'll have to put dragongentleman on a strict limit--we have so many books now that you can't walk around the house.

Have you read the Burglar mysteries by Lawrence Block? The protagonist is a burglar by profession but he also runs a secondhand bookstore for cover, and it sounds like a really nice lifestyle (the bookstore part, that is--the burglar part is too scary!).

141. Big step, but congratulations!
Not many are brave enough to take that first leap. I know I'm not. Still working for the "man". Or trying to find a job that would let me work for the "man".

155. Congratulations!
I want to clone myself so I can run a bookstore/community center and still run my practice. Good luck - if you add an online website, I'll "stop in " and buy something.
