Any hairdressers on DU?
Or anyone who knows about hair coloring? I grew the color off my hair a few years ago and have been silver ever since - probably 95% silver. I am getting a little tired of it and was thinking of a light ashy blonde color. How would solid gray hair dye? How can I keep it from getting an orangy tone?

3. Not one, but am in similar circumstances and I dye my hair a
light ash blonde, too. My husband is younger than I am and we look about 20 years apart if I don't--it just makes me really uncomfortable.

Besides, I just look really good that way (hence the username, of course).

My advice--get it done by a pro (either go to a trusted hairdresser you already know or get some good recommendations) the first time. You won't regret it, I promise.

S/he will probably recommend a slightly darker color than you are thinking of; because of the way the silver picks up the dye, you will still get the desired results.

Then you can do the roots yourself--I do.

5. It's dark, almost black.
It is primarily in the back.

7. The problem of orange is with that 5%.
It almost impossible to lift hair from dark brown/black to light blonde without orange results.
This is really a problem if that hair is concentrated in one spot on the head instead of being dispersed through out. The silver hair on the other hand can be colored any color just about.

At a salon they can mix 2 different formulas for each type of hair.

Gray/silver hair need alot of neutral/natural color to replace all the tones common to hair that are lost. Black/dark brown hair needs a lot of ash to control brass and possibly a much stronger peroxide than is sold in stores.

If you go all over with an ash color your risking having your white hair turn dull, greenish cast or a muddy lifeless color. If you go all over with a neutral/natural your risking your dark hair turning a very warm, brassy, orange type color.

I would have to say a salon would be the best place to have it done. I would probably mix 3/4 neutal with 1/4 cool. I don't know what level I would use since light blonde and dark brown can mean different things to different people.
