Poll question: Grade Katie Couric's performance so far
Edited on Sat Sep-09-06 09:47 AM by mvd
As I said before, I haven't watched her on the CBS Evening News. It she worth tuning in?

1. I'd have to say 'other'...
Because I've managed to not watch yet. And tomorrow's my only day off until NEXT Sunday so I'll be spared for yet one more week.

Even if I didn't have to work, I don't think I'd be bustin' ass to watch. Perky is perky, whether it's 7 a.m. or 5 p.m., and it's annoying as hell.

2. OK, I added "haven't watched"

It is really a poll for the watchers, but I suppose "haven't watched" should be there.

3. F-
So...the progression from the solid journalistic credentials and calm reassuring demeanor of Walter Cronkite to...perky. Great job, CBS.

5. Second that... from Murrow and Cronkite to perky.
Have not watched perky in years and I see no reason to change that, since she is now officially way out of her league.

4. A lot of the things I don't like about the show
are things that I don't like about TV news in general these days. There's no news in the news. One of her top stories last night (or was it Thursday?) was about a controversy with the Facebook website... With only a half hour to work with, you'd think they could go with more pressing stories. And after all that time on a morning show, I just can't help but think of her primarily as an entertainment reporter.

19. It's the influence of the 24 hour news networks.
Everybody figures that, if they copy Faux News' brand of infotainment, it'll up the ratings. What everybody seems to forget is that Faux is a pretty shitty network when it comes to actually reporting news.

If I want entertainment news (hint: I usually don't) I'll watch Entertainment Tonight or Insider or Celebrity Justice or one of the 9,000 other entertainment shows.

23. I agree, I miss just regular news reporting, reporting the stories and
not having a stupid split screen talking to someone. You're correct, there is no news in news. Also, the camera angles seem more like a Cobert report than a serious news station. I'm not impressed.

6. She smirks inappropriately & her show is an Entertainment Tonight ripoff
Katie Couric is just not able to take herself out of the story. She smirks inappropriately during serious stories. And, the 'news' is told in the exact format of Entertainment Tonight. Short, mindless drivel.

Ann Curry's reports on NBC (from investigations to simple newsreading) are far superior.

7. yeah, it's like they wanted it to look like ET
that's a shame. If they could do some in-depth reporting, that would be great. I think Katie could have some journalistic cred, if they would let her actually do NEWS.

I agree with you about Ann Curry. She would have been a better choice.

8. Katie is entirely in control of her show.
In interviews, she's outlined exactly how she's chosen all of these alleged "improvements."

All of the blame belongs to her.

11. odd how "the news" is now someone's "show"
that ain't right. That's why I watch the News Hour with Jim Lehrer.

Between the internet and cable news channels, I just don't watch network news broadcasts anymore.

15. Bad lighting on her face. She looked better on the Today show. And the
position of her head, as if she's looking down slightly, gives a kind of condescending look. They really need to rethink the camera position and lighting.

16. I'm unimpressed
I gave her a chance, but I only got through about 20 minutes. The dark eyeshadow, the dark clothes, and string of pearls, it's all overcompensation to proclaim, "I'm serious, honestly!" And her whole demeanor while speaking is awful. She reminds me of a generic girl in high school who's generally pretty happy-go-lucky, but is assigned an oral exercise on the AIDS epidemic in Botswana. Instead of actually becoming serious, she feels she needs to act "serious" and lower her voice, slow down her talking, and generally put on a show of how serious she is really. She doesn't have presence, which is unfortunate, but true. I know Katie Couric has a personality in there, I've seen it, but because she's so preoccupied with "seriousness" her personality has completely vanished.

Maybe she'll get better, but I doubt it. She's been on TV for how many years now?

Competent... nothing special. Then again, none of the network anchors impress me very much. Being an anchor these days seems to consist of nothing more than reading the news in an authoritative voice.

I think the reason people trusted anchors like Cronkite was because they seemed to give a damn about what they were reporting. The current batch of anchors seem to reflect the genuine lack of intellectual curiosity so many Americans seem to posess.

20. Are you kidding? Who here is actually going to give her an A+?
Especially since she's not a liberal-leaning reporter such as Amy Goodman. Katie Couric will never do enough to satisfy anyone here. But hey - let's talk about her appearance a bit more, okay? That's much more interesting. :eyes:

21. I watched exactly 15 seconds of her
Mrs. Giant Robot wanted to see how she was doing so I turned on the CBS news. We saw her interview with the President. That should say it all. After the first mind numbing question, we looked at each other and the channel was quickly changed.

Katie and Tweety, in obscurity together.
