The only reason to have Quicktime Pro is if you plan on actually producing Quicktime files yourself. The free version that came with your computer is just a player, and that's really all you should ever need. Periodically updates come out for it, and you just just go ahead and install them when your computer tells you there are updates.
As for your inability to play that file, most likely they are having troubles on their end, and there's really nothing you can do about it. You could download the Mac version of Windows Media Player or Real Player if they offer either of those an option, and you may find that one of those will play fine.
It's all site specific errors that you are getting, and likely the person who encoded the quicktime files never actually tested them on a Mac. Just my guess.
Have fun with your new computer!
