Locked myself out of the car today
No big deal, the tow service was there in half an hour. Now they have a slick little inflatable pouch which creates some space where they can reach in and unlock the door without going behind the panel. Breaking in is a cinch with one of those.

1. I did that once. I never figure that if you used the key fob to open the
trunk, it would lock again when you closed it if the car was locked.

Yup, I had put my keys down in the trunk when I took my camera bag out.

Duh.

3. you only get your full 'duh' points if you
lock your keys in the car while it's running with your purse on the passenger seat with your cell phone during a snowstorm. Yeah, and the locksmith slipped me some xtian lit with the bill.

8. I can one-up your experience. Many years ago, we were scrambling
Edited on Sat Sep-09-06 10:52 PM by Radio_Lady
to catch an outbound flight at Logan Airport, Boston to Austin, Texas, where my husband was to go on a job interview.

I pulled up to the short-term luggage drop point, and my husband jumped out of the car to unload the trunk. I left the key in the ignition with the flashers on, and accidentally locked the car doors with the motor on. (Husband had left his key set at home.) Purse was in the front seat, but there were no cellphones at that time.

Luckily, Massport security got a hurry call and came to unlock our car. We were able to park the car and make our flight.

Hubby now is laughing about it... ha-ha... but I can assure you it wasn't funny when it happened!

I now have a car with "keyless entry" and I never want any other kind!

4. Reminds me of a really bad joke
Did you hear about the (insert racial or ethnic slur here or use "graduate of" followed by the name of a college that was a rival to yours) who locked his keys in his car? It took him all day to get his family out.

7. I locked myself out of the car once...with it running!
Worse, the only reason I was out at all was because my boss had called me to go get the spare keys to the state truck because they had locked themselves out of it! I stopped, left the car running but LOCKED THE DOOR (I am in the habit of locking doors when getting out of the car)! So we ended up calling the Lock Doc. Now that I have electronic door locks, I don't think I will have this problem.

Hide-A-Key is your friend.

18. I'd like to offer a warning about electronic door keys/locks
Silly me thought the darn thing would just work. I took the electronic "key", left the car running and when I went back to unlock my car, it wouldn't work. I read later that the electronic key doesn't work when the real key is in the ignition. Just a warning so you don't learn this the same way I did.

10. I always have a spare key in my wallet
Edited on Mon Sep-11-06 01:25 AM by Prisoner_Number_Six
I've been known to forget the keys when getting out- my car has a security system that automatically locks the doors after 30 seconds. I'd be screwed without my extra door key.

12. I love the keypad on the door
just cant lock yourself out anyway you look at it,,, unless the battery dies at the same moment that you lock the keys in.

13. Did that the first time my parents let me drive without them
Went to the mall with a couple of friends and locked the keys in with the lights on. We bought some wire hangers and managed to get it open but that was over 30 years ago and I have never done it again.

15. There was a time in my life that I was completely frazzled...
which I won't go into at this time. However, during that time I locked my keys in my car three times in two weeks.

I ended up dating the AAA dispatcher.

17. About ten years ago, I locked my then three year old in the car
along with my cell phone. Totally panicked. Someone walking by called the manager who called the fire department and they were really great. Came right away and opened the car.

It wasn't hot, or I would have broken in to get him, but I was really freaked. I was trying to talk him into wriggling out of his car seat, but it was too tight.

Found out that night I was pregnant again, so I attributed it to raging hormones.

19. Police won't help just anyone, but if there is a baby inside
they always will.

I blame mine on habits I developed living in Chicago. Lock everything all the time. Don't need to be quite so careful in Wisconsin, but old habits die hard.

21. Those crazy germans have a spare plastic key
there's only one thing you can do with it-unlock your car. It is made to fit in a wallet, not a key ring.

Audi and VW offer this, i think BMW does too. I wish my Honda had this too, but nope. It's laser cut so I can only get a new one from a Honda dealer.

On the other hand, I'm paranoid about getting locked out so I always keep my keys with me when I leave the car and put it in my pocket NOT in the trunk. My Civic has this annoying feature of locking itself when parked after 2 minutes...which I guess is good if I ever forget to lock it.

Cars with the OnStar service can be remote unlocked like in the commercials. And some cars have a keypad where you can punch in a code to unlock it.
