sport, my constant companion of 15 years
has gone to be with the angels.
the doctor came to sport's home yesterday at 11:30 am, where with his family he went to sleep.
may god bless guide and protect him
keeping him always in the palm of his hand and ever before his eyes. amen.
i rest in the faith that at the door of heaven, my sporty boy will be there waiting for me.
words can't say how much i miss that dog.

1. The death of a pet is very painful.
I still get sad when I think about Maxie, our Rottweiler, who we put to sleep four years ago.

I know it is totally cliche to quote greeting cards, but I recently I saw a greeting card for the death of a pet, and I thought it was very touching:

"They come into our lives feeling abandoned, and oh do we know the feeling when they leave."

3. isn't that the truth
i knew that dog would break my heart one day
and here i am tears, and runny nose writing about him.
i'm a sleepless type lad with no one to take for a walk at 2:00 am -- ah well such such is the time with our furry friends.

37. When my dog of 15 years died the vet sent a card that said...
"The happy hunting ground is a better place by far - for having added a bright new star" - CHeesy? Yes...but I thought it was very thoughtful of the vet to send.

The day Nicky died, I broke out in tears on my bed, my sister's younger dog jumped on the bed with me and looked at me for a couple seconds then lied down beside me and rested her head on my chest looking sullenly into my eyes.

Even if cats could sense human pain like that...would they care as much as a dog? Doubt it.

I know that sadness. Our little ones we love, who loved us far more innocently then any human could possibly love, are always with us. I know how much it hurts. Im so sorry

4. The Rainbow Bridge:
Edited on Sun Dec-21-03 08:22 AM by Padraig18
Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

8. i can't put his leash and collar
away just yet -- and his rug remans messed up just as he left it...
but oh yes i know he will be there waiting for me -- and i can't wait to be with him and my other dogs again.
but sport and me went through cancer treatments together -- so there is this special ''thing'' between us.
thank you.

14. I understand, lad.
After my parent's died and I came to live here in America, Andy, my brother's dog, became my 'confidant' and provided me with much healing. Although he passed last year, his collar and tags are in my jewelry box to this day.

It's altogether right and proper that we should mourn good friends like Sport and Andy.

33. have you ever read the tributes at the Rainbow Bridge
some of them are very long and all are very touching but the one that made me really start bawling was from a man to his dog: "You were a GOOD girl". *blubber*

5. I'm so very sorry you lost your special friend, xchrom...
That precious cross-species bond we have with our four-legged friends is incredibly strong, and is heartbreaking to lose.

You will always carry Sport close to your heart, and he'll always be within reach in your warmest memories.

Peace.

I have that same decision facing myself very soon. She's 13 and her arthritis is so bad I have to carry her up the steps. I won't be long......... I don't know how I'll handle it either.
Best wishes and keep the little pooch in your heart always. They're truly man's best friend.

22. I feel your pain. In fact, right now I'm getting choked up.
I have lost 2 dogs in the past 4 years. I'm so sorry. I know it may seem callous, but I think you can fill some of the void you feel from your loss is to get another dog soon. At least, that's what I did and it helped me. I had adopted Bear Bear, a 9-year-old Rottweiler, in 1997 from a friend who was going to put her down because she was getting too old. Well, she had a wonderful 2-1/2 years with me before she died in 1999. This same friend had another Rottweiler that she had bought to breed and then changed her mind. So I inherited my Legend. Getting her so soon after Bear Bear's death helped ease the pain of losing her.

The other dog I had to put down was one I had taken in after a next-door neighbor died. But he had an obstruction in his intestine that the vet said was probably a tumor and she could guarantee that an operation would be successful. So unfortunately, I had to put him to sleep. That also broke my heart and also Legend's as they were such good friends.

If there is a heaven, I know that all of our beloved pets are there.

Seems that quite a few DUers have recently lost loved ones and I cry for each of you. I've gone thru the same experience and I know how much it hurts. It is an act of unselfish love to let them go. Bless them all. We know that you took on the pain in order to release Sport from his.

My condolences.

I know the feeling as I had to put my doggy to sleep 3 months ago. On Christmas Eve, it will be exactly 3 months. I am still thinking of her and I still miss her very much. I've been blessed to have her for so many years and noone and nothing can take away my memories and the great time we spend together. May your dog rest in peace. Be strong, xchrom!

26. about two years ago, I had to put my companion of 16 years down . . .
hardest thing I've ever had to do . . . the worst part was making the decision, not wanting to do it too soon or wait too long . . . I think I got it right, but I still miss Dusty immensely . . . please accept my sincere condolences on your loss . . . I know how hard it is . . . the grief will pass, but the memories will always remain . . .

btw . . . about 8 months after Dusty passed, I adopted another black lab mix who I named Dylan . . . he's also a great companion, and has a little of Dusty's mischief in him . . . he's not a replacement, just a new friend . . . after a time, you too will find another furry creature to bring into your life . . . peace . . .
