Which early primary state would you move to?

Poll question: Which early primary state would you move to?

Imagine you are working for a Presidential Primary campaign. Of the four states that will probably be at the front of the Calendar, which would you most like to live in for several months to a year to work for the campaign? Please explain why. Assume you are not working for a moderate corporate sell-out.

1. Nevada is within driving distance of home.

Anyhow, I hate snow, humidity and fundies and Nevada is largely free of the last two and gets very little of the first.

They have a lot of Mormons in Nevada. Do they not act too much like the fundies in other parts of the country? I know they aren't nearly as bad as Southern Baptists but Southern Utah can be very restrictive.

8. They're pretty insular

Unless you're deep in the Land of Mo or at a Mormon event like a wedding reception, they tend to keep to thier own but not really expect everybody else to live up to thier rules. Even then, unless you do something that makes you an obvious outsider like wear something cut in such a way there couldn't be a garment under it they will generally treat you really well. OTOH, Mormon communities are super-shitty to anybody who is Mormon but not Mormon enough, but even then they'll shun you in that passive agressive I-just-want-to-help way.

I grew up with a lot of Mormon classmates and teachers, so I'm pretty used to them. They have a creepy tendency to set up thier own parallel social structures, but they're definitely better neighbors than fundies because they value education for both sexes (although there's a lame expectation that young women will give up thier careers and dedicate themselves to thier children and thier calling shortly after they get married when they start having kids) and won't make constant attempts to evangelize you the way fundies do.

14. Mostly Nevada's like California in that respect

There are religious people, but for the most part there aren't religious people, except on some of the small towns where they tend to be balanced out by the loaner types and thier strong social libertarian streak. Most of the western states are like that, though it gets more religious as you go in, and there are the obvious exceptions in Utah and parts of Idaho with Mormons, and then the great SoCal fundie exodus sent all the whackjob Focus on the Facism types to Colorado.

With the exception of South Carolina, all of these are fairly purplish red states that could be turned to blue. But unlike New Hampshire and Iowa, Nevada has this:

3. I wonder

if campaigns will have rules about their staff going to strip clubs and casinos. Probably not. It never stopped anyone working in Iowa. I've been to strip clubs with Presidential primary campaign staffers before so I'm sure it won't be any different in Nevada.

Kerry had a lot of those in '04: "Firefighters for Kerry, Teachers for Kerry, Nurses for Kerry, Irish Americans for Kerry" and on and on. It would be wrong to not include strippers. Great idea.

Actually, my boss hinted that he'd like me to move to Vegas, as he'd like to have a secondary office in Convention Central. Not gonna do it.

18. I hate to say it in some way, but South Carolina.

I know there are some nice people down there just like us. I believe all we need in the Carolinas, both North and South, is a little organization to our fury. We may just be a powerful voting block with some organization and some inspiration and some momentum. Plus many in this general area tend to just follow SC's lead on whatever they decide. I may be wrong, but hey, that's what I'D do.

23. I do like the idea

of a bunch of Democratic candidates spending time and organizing in SC, while the Republicans aren't. You may be right that a little work is all it will take.

Almost no ice and snow. And when we do get it, we close the state down and stay home.

Seriously, we could use some help here. There are a lot of fundamentalists in the state, but most don't vote in our primary. We need to be in a good position to help some of our folks win in the general election.

I can't believe NH is winning by so much. This board is too Northeast heavy. I have no desire to deal with people who think they are so much better than the rest of America that they have to vote first in the primary, and they act like it too. NH is great in the fall but it will be miserable in December and January right before the primary.
