Stingrays mutilated after ‘Croc Hunter’ death

SYDNEY, Australia - At least 10 stingrays have been slain since “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin was killed by one of the fish, an official said Tuesday, prompting a spokesman for the late TV star’s animal charity to urge people not take revenge on the animals.

Irwin died last week when a stingray barb pierced his chest as he recorded a show off the Great Barrier Reef.

Slain stingrays since have been discovered on two beaches in Queensland state on Australia’s eastern coast. Two were discovered Tuesday with their tails lopped off, state fisheries department official Wayne Sumpton said.

Michael Hornby, the executive director of Irwin’s Wildlife Warriors conservation group, said he was concerned the rays were being hunted and killed in retaliation for Irwin’s death.

10. When I was studying Marine Biology

the movie "Jaws" came out. I was at Moody College (A&M) in Galveston and
people were indiscriminately killing sharks. One thing I unfortunately
witnessed was a female hammerhead dragged out of the water. She was so
frightened that she gave birth right on the jetty. Slack jawed idiots
started stomping on the babies. I am not surprised at all that idiots
are taking out their frustration on rays. It's disgusting and brutal.

20. WWSD - What Would Steve Do

Any true fan of the man would know that he devoted his life to helping animals and would never want any of them harmed for a stupid reason like revenge. He regularly risked his own life to save crocodiles and other cold-blooded killing machines so he would never be angry at a harmless stingray who acted in self-defense. It was a freak accident. How often do you hear about stingrays killing people?

its territory. :( Steve Irwin knew the risks, and the stingray wasn't just being spiteful or mean---it was a wild animal defending itself.
