I need suggestions for an awesome hotel in NYC on 9/22.

There are soooo many wonderful DUers who are willing to travel to meet MissHoneychurch.

At first I thought something in New Jersey near the Path would be good but I'm having trouble finding accommodations in a safe easily accessible location. I guess it's the old lady in me coming out = I want to find a location where we can walk around late at night for drinks and/or coffee.

HELP ME, help me please.

2. Try the Yale Club
It's right across the street from Grand Central, it's not terribly expensive, and it's a pretty neat building (lots of history, etc.).

I try to get a room for my parents there whenever they come visit me for all the above-mentioned reasons.

3. Joanie, I'm afraid the rates will be awesome.
You need the room(s) for Friday night, 9/22, right? I don't know what your budget is, but I just tried hotels.com and could not find anything under $200 for a single room with a private bath. Weekend rates are very high.

That Yale Club idea sounds like a great option.

6. I am a preferred guest with Starwood Hotels. I love their service & rooms.

My options are:

270 West 43rd Street

811 7th Avenue on 53rd Street

120 East 39th Street, Between Lexington and Park Avenue

541 Lexington Avenue

130 East 39th Street, Between Lexington and Park Avenue

160 West 25th Street

They are all near the $300 range but I've saved so much money while staying in Tennessee that it won't break my piggy-bank to splurge on a great place for the night. :)

All I need is a little more input on the best location from DUers that are going to join us for drinks.

7. Well, I think hanging out near Times Square is kind of crappy but...
the great thing is you can pick up pretty much every subway there, so hanging out anywhere in Manhattan would be easy. And the subways are pretty safe. I've never had problems even solo really late at night.

The village just has cooler places to hang out.

9. Would this be any better:
160 West 25th Street

???

I do love the Village but 25th Street is in Chelsea.

10. Yeah, Chelsea is cool.
Everything around the Times Square area just tends to be touristy and expensive even for NYC. If you talk to LionessPriyanka, she'll probably have some good ideas on places to meet up.

12. I agree with haruka.
That seems like a very good choice. I don't know the Chelsea area that well, but I am sure it's safe, and there are literally hundreds of restaurants and bars within blocks. Also two subway lines nearby, so you can head down to the Village or uptown, and it should be convenient for NYC DUers.

11. Is the 7th and 53rd one a Marriott?
There's a really nice marriott right in that area anyway.

I watched a bomb squad out my office window as they opened a suitcase in front of that hotel in mid-2002. Quite the procedure!

I also spent rather a few nights in the cigar bar at that hotel.

14. I like Marriotts too but the one I was looking at was:
Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers
811 7th Avenue on 53rd Street New York, New York 10019 United States

17. Ah, yes- a Sheraton, not a Marriotte
That's the hotel I was thinking of - wonderful place. I never stayed there, but I drank a lot there. :-)

The hotel across the street was commandeered by my company after 9-11 and the loss of our offices, and was turned into a giant trading floor space. Sadly, I didn't get to work in that one - I had temp offices down by the NYSE - but I think we had that hotel for a good six to ten months.

18. Rabrrrrrr, please tell me about your time in NYC after 9-11.

We haven't gotten to know each other very well here on DU.
Life leaves its make on all of us. What happened?

4. We stayed at the Barclay next door to the Waldorf a couple years ago
by way of Hotwire, as I recall. It was the 4th of July weekend, so probably even harder to get cheap rooms than now. It wasn't exactly a bargain, but considering the location pretty reasonable. (As I say, it was years ago so my memory is spotty, but I think it was $180/night double occupancy.) Room was small, bed was large; we adored it.

5. DoubleTree in Times Sq
Edited on Tue Sep-12-06 11:29 AM by Corgigal
The minute I walked in they bumped us up to a double room. No extra charge and the lobby isn't floor level. They have great security features. I was traveling with two minor children so for me, also, security was a good feature.

I think Times Sq is very safe at night.
