Poll question: best ALBUM of the 1960's

in a continuation of the best song of the 1960's poll (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=5619440&mesg_id=5619440), it is decided that we need a best album of the 1960's poll to cover all potential flamewar ground.

(these are just some of my personal choices so please don't ridicule and mock my stupidity for leaving something off)

15. I'm extremely biased, being a West Coast kid...

Cripes, Grace Slick was my neighbor until the Water Company burned her house down. Now she's TomInTib's neighbor and is packing a shotgun.

Truth be told there was a ton of great music from the sixties from the Beach Boys to the Beatles, and Bob Dylan was definitely an influence to reckon with. I'm still playing vinyl from the sixties and only wish I had the money to have acquire more albums back then. Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks is getting a lot of play in my house lately.

5. I know this is over-played

But I am going with Sgt. Peppers. The music, the recording techniques, the different sounds and the album cover alone is worth it. It changed music forever. It was the first album to have lyrics printed on it by the way. It also sent Brian Wilson to bed for a decade or two. :)

There are so many perspectives on that album that I am hard-pressed to find another record that even comes close to it as a piece of work that changed so many things within maybe a week.

51. That Album Changed Everything!

It was the first left turn for pop music. The Beatles showed that popular music didn't need to be "poppy". It was their first real move toward more adventerous ideas and instrumentation and, imo, was their most fully integrated "band" sound. After that, the albums may have been great, but they were nothing that could be played by a four piece group anymore. Rubber Soul showed the way in that one could do interesting and challenging music, with just the four people, and still make good, commercially viable albums.

.. is unfairly not represented here. It was a seminal album, although it took years to see that.

I'm going to go off the wall and vote for King Crimson's debut album "in the court of the crimson king" from 1969. It is an amazing recording that stands up to the test of time.

...and they are just as relevant today as then. As well as "Epitaph", arguably one of the top 3 anti-war anti-nuke songs of all time! What makes this record so amazing is that the music is even better than the lyrics :)

Combining all sorts of different styles to produce a masterpiece...

Many would say Sgt Peppers...

But Revolver was the lead into SP and was tempered by the brilliant George Martin...

SP, while stunning in and of itself, was left too much in the hands of the Beatles and so was not as disciplined...
