3. Dear boss,
Besotted though I am of your countless charms, the day has come wherein I must express my devastation at my impending departure. It breaks my heart to write this. Truly I've never witnessed a magnificent specimen such as yourself, and I pray I'm worthy of a solid recommendation by the likes of you.

Love and kisses,
Neo.

17. This is the one I endorse.
Simple, to the point, elegantly understated.

Such a letter will never come back to bite you in the arse a few years down the road and will nonetheless effectively accomplish the desired result.

7. I wrote a similar one not too long ago. Unfortunately, I can't find it.
I was SURE I'd emailed it to myself before quitting. It was a masterpiece of telling my old boss to go to hell and making her think she'd enjoy the trip. I'm sorry to have lost it. :(

You can do it. Start by writing everything you really wish you could say, then tone it down, pare it to one page, and you'll have it. :hi:

8. i was thinking of quoting Tyler Durden
in Fligt Club about the 'dangerous employee who snaps' or Lester Burnham in American Beauty:

"My job consists of basically masking my contempt for the assholes in charge, and, at least once a day, retiring to the men's room so I can jerk off while I fantasize about a life that doesn't so closely resemble Hell."

11. Keep ego and emotion out of it.
Just say the basics. "I'm resigning effective (date) to pursue other options. I will of course assist any replacement hired before then, and will leave all of my work in proper order and well documented, to make the transition smoother for my replacement. I appreciate the opportunity and support you and the company have provided me in my tenure here."

If the final line is sarcastic, your boss will know that, but will never be able to prove it if he has to.

14. Here's one I found in one of those tubes in the Internets.
Dear ______ :

After an appropriate period of deliberation, I have come to the decision to tender my resignation from (company name), effective (date).

Please know that I still maintain a high level of respect for you as a manager and colleague, and I thank you sincerely for the support and assistance you have offered me in each of those roles. I have been proud to work for (company name) over the past eight years; it has been a journey that has provided me with an unparalleled foundation to move forward to new and exciting opportunities.

As such, I have decided to become a professional pirate. It has always been a dream of mine to live the life of a swashbuckling corsair, beholden to none and master of all I survey. Once my crew of unabashed rogues is assembled, we shall take to the capacious expanse of the high seas to pursue fortune, fame, and hair-raising adventure.

Our path may not be filled with the porcine comforts and technological marvels that (company name) provides, but we shall nonetheless move forward to carve a name for ourselves in the annals of bold insurgency and death-defying derring-do. Once I have a keen blade at my hip and the Jolly Roger is flapping high above me, I believe I will find my true calling.

Please note that I am currently accepting applications for First Officer, if you are at all interested in applying. I will provide a full medical and dental plan, which will offer immediate coverage of all maladies other than scurvy and the occasional bout of rickets.

Sincerely ,

20. Take the advice of the cooler heads here
Make it short, sweet, and to the point. I have seen people turn in vitriolic resignations over the years only to have it bite them firmly in the ass. Resist the urge to react and be the bigger person.
