Anybody else ever have this problem?

I love to travel, but I always get scared beforehand.

Once I'd committed to a trip to London. I would have backed out if I could've gotten my money back. Since I couldn't, I went on ahead, and loved it.

I'm not scared of anything specific, such as the plane being hijacked, being mugged, etc.

1. The whole traveling process is nervewracking.

I'm one of those people who shows up at the airport four hours before the plane leaves just in case. I'm never convinced I'm on the right plane until I disembark at the right airport, and I check that I have my tickets neurotically every six minutes.

2. I get nervous just going to the grocery store.

I think the things that could go wrong (Murphy's Law) go through my head so fast that I cannot pinpoint one thing that is worrying me.

3. I always get irritable right before flying

I can barely stand being around myself before traveling...I'm that bad. I don't know why exactly, I guess it's the stress of packing, making sure I don't forget anything and tying up any loose ends before leaving. Then the hassle of making sure I'm at the airport on time, going through security, etc. Once I'm at the gate I change back into my usual happy self. Very odd.

I am always nervous before any trip; even a vacation I've looked forward to. I think it's about leaving the familiar (and usually safe) for the unfamiliar.

5. I used to be just like you.

Then I decided, a few years back, to just throw myself into the experience... packing, waiting at the airport, dealing with the person in the seat next to me, sleeping on a strange bed etc. etc. I consider it all a mind-broadening experience & that's what it becomes!

7. yes, I have mini panic attacks, but never did until I acquired pets...

I could walk out the door w/o a look back, loved the process of flying, etc., everything. But once I got my first cat, on up to the 7 we have now, I started to freak every time we'd prepare to travel.

I love to travel but just have a hard time finding the best way to have my kitties cared for. If I find someone to care for them at home, I worry they'll let the cats out accidentally. If I take them to a good kennel, then I have to add an extra $500-1000 onto the trip costs if we're gone more than a week. Sigh. So, I don't travel as much as I like to, and that's the ONLY drawback to having so many cats. I love 'em all, just can't stop worrying about them.

8. I just went to a funeral

today for a friend who lived his life in fear of doing anything. He hardly ever left the house and had very few friends--and none of them really close to him. He died watching TV and just 45 yrs. old. Think of what he missed living like that and dying at a fairly young age.

Don't live your life afraid to venture out. Go for it!!

9. I think I'm like the least nervous person about traveling ever.

I'm the person that will be packing for a 10 day trip as they should be leaving for the airport. I went to Ireland for 10 days solo once with no plans at all or a set place to stay. All I knew was I was flying into Dublin and flying out of Shannon ten days later. And no one had any means of contacting me. It was the most fun I've ever had. My mom said she didn't know if she'd find me at the airport when it was time to pick me up. Not because she was worried about something happening to me, but rather just worried that I'd decide to try staying in Ireland (if I could, I would).

Oddly enough, she worries about me going into NYC with friends for the hundredth time, but she has no problems with me heading off to a foreign country I've never been to before alone. Bizarre.
